Surupa Gupta, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs, presented a paper titled “Shifting Goal-posts: Global IPR Norms and the U.S.-India Conflict” at the annual meeting of the International Political Science Association held in Poznan, Poland, during July 23-28, 2016. The paper was based on her research on U.S.-India relations as an East-West Center fellow during her sabbatical.
Gupta Publishes Research Article

Surupa Gupta, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs, co-wrote a research paper titled “Agriculture and its Discontents: Coalitional Politics at the WTO with Special Reference to India’s Food Security Interests” with J. P. Singh. The paper was published in a special issue on “Developing Countries, Emerging Powers and the WTO” of International Negotiations, a peer-reviewed journal.

Gupta Speaks on Multilateral Trade Negotiations at American University

Surupa Gupta, associate professor of political science and international affairs, spoke at a panel titled “Trade Policy Now and Beyond the Nairobi Ministerial” at the 11th symposium on International Trade at the Washington College of Law at American University. This was the first of three panels that had participants from U.S. and Brazilian governments, academia, private sector and think tanks.
UMW Professor Named 2015 Asia Studies Fellow

Surupa Gupta, associate professor of political science and international affairs at the University of Mary Washington, has been selected as a 2015 Asia Studies Fellow at the East-West Center in Washington, D.C.

The fellowship provides residence of three or six months at the East-West Center in Washington, D.C., to scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing on significant contemporary U.S.-Asia policy topics, including diplomatic, politico-security and economic issues.
“During my fellowship I will research trade relations between the U.S. and India and focus specifically on farm trade and trade-related Intellectual Property Rights as these have been particularly contentious issues,” said Gupta, whose official research topic is entitled Indispensable Partners?: U.S.-India Relations and the Domestic Politics of Farm Trade and Intellectual Property Rights.
Gupta specializes in international political economy, politics of globalization, comparative politics of south Asia and Indian foreign policy. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and a bachelor of arts and a master’s degree from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. She was awarded a Jepson Fellowship at UMW in 2011.
“I am excited about being in an environment with other scholars with similar interests, having an office in D.C. this fall and that I will have the opportunity to conduct interviews with some of the participants and the stakeholders involved in this policy area,” said Gupta.

Gupta Awarded Asia Studies Fellowship

The East-West Center, a Washington, D.C., and Honolulu-based policy think tank, has awarded an Asia Studies fellowship to Surupa Gupta, associate professor of political science and international affairs. Gupta will be a resident fellow this fall at the Washington, D.C., office working on U.S.-India relations with a focus on trade and intellectual property rights.
Gupta Presents Paper at International Conference

Surupa Gupta, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs, presented a paper titled “India, RCEP and the Farm Sector: Challenges and Opportunities,” at the conference on Building Pan-Asian Connectivity, held in Kolkata, India March 10-11.
The conference, organized by the Center on American and Global Security, Indiana University and sponsored by the U.S. State Department, addressed the significance of connecting India and Southeast Asia in order to improve regional security, economic development and environmental sustainability.

ISA is the premier disciplinary association in International Relations in North America.
Gupta Delivers Lecture in New Delhi

Surupa Gupta, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs, delivered a lecture on India’s policy options on two competing multilateral regional trade agreements: the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Trans-Pacific Partnership at the panel on “Hegemony of Trade and Investment Flows” at the Asian Forum on Global Governance (AFGG) in New Delhi on Oct. 30. The AFGG, organized by Observer Research Foundation, one of New Delhi’s premier think tanks, is a forum with speakers and delegates from academia, governments, private corporate sector and non-governmental organizations from over 30 countries.
