Sushma Subramanian, Assistant Professor of English and the primary journalist in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, has published a story, “Unlock the Gut-Shrinking Secrets of Gastrophysics: How one meal can change everything you think you know about eating—and overeating,” in the March issue of Men’s Health, on stands now. The story profiles a pop-up restaurant in London called Kitchen Theory, which has built its menu around the scientific discoveries of a University of Oxford researcher named Charles Spence who studies how the senses interact while eating.
Rafferty Publishes Essay Series on U.S. Presidents
Colin Rafferty, Associate Professor of English, had “The Imagineer Considers Tomorrow (#45.1)” recently published in the new issue of Waxwing. It joins four other essays published back in October and was commissioned by the editors in the wake of the 2016 presidential election.
Presidents Day Press Conference
UMW President Troy Paino and James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, will share the stage on Monday, Feb. 20, for a one-of-a-kind Presidents Day press conference focused on the themes of leadership and civic responsibility.
The session, featuring historical re-enactor James “Jay” G. Harrison III as Monroe, will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in Monroe Hall, Room 116, on the Fredericksburg campus. James Monroe was inaugurated for his first term on March 4, 1817. President Paino will be inaugurated as UMW’s 10th president on April 21, 2017.
“In celebration of Presidents Day, the James Monroe Museum is presenting a unique opportunity to have a discussion with both presidents on the cusp of their presidencies, looking forward to the path of leadership before them,” said Scott Harris, director of the James Monroe Museum.
Harris noted striking similarities between the two leaders. Both stress the importance of having an educated and civic-minded citizenry in order to have a healthy democracy and a bright future for the nation.
Speaking at Washington College in Pennsylvania on Sept. 4, 1817, Monroe said, “In providing for the prosperity and happiness of a country, a careful attention to literary institutions, and the education of youth ought ever to occupy a high place. To the youth we must look with an eye of deep interest – they are the hope of our country.”
Monroe’s thoughts seem to have been reflected in Paino’s address when he was introduced to the UMW community on Feb. 19, 2016: “What we really are about here at Mary Washington and what really attracted me was that we produce young people who have a servant’s heart, who become passionate about something and want to improve the world, who want to be fully engaged in their communities, and want to advance our democracy in a positive way, and to me that’s why I do this work.”

Gately Performs with NSO & Patti Labelle
Doug Gately performed with the National Symphony Orchestra Pops, conducted by Steven Reineke at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Feb 14. The performance featured legendary singer Patti Labelle. Labelle is a multiple Grammy winner, has received numerous awards, and has sold more than 50 million records. Rolling Stone has put her on their list of 100 Greatest Singers.
Caffrey Returns to Songwriters’ Showcase
Senior Associate Registrar Kevin Caffrey will be featured as part of the Fredericksburg Songwriters’ Showcase at LibertyTown Arts on Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. The Fredericksburg Songwriters’ Showcase is a monthly concert series featuring original acoustic music. Caffrey first performed at the Showcase in January 2014. He returns this month to premiere new songs form his forthcoming CD, downshifter. Admission is $10; $5 for children and students. LibertyTown Arts is located on 916 Liberty St. in downtown Fredericksburg.

Al-Tikriti Joins MSF Association Event in Portland
As part of his duties as vice president of MSF / Doctors Without Borders USA, Middle East History Professor Nabil Al-Tikriti joined an MSF Association open board meeting, hub gathering and Association retreat in Portland, Oregon. The event took place Feb. 3-4 and consisted of two days of reflective sessions on operations, human resources, labor policy, institutional racism and other issues of associative interest.
Green Zone Training Initiative
A “Green Zone” is a location recognized by veterans as a safe place. Student veterans and service members are a diverse group of individuals, ranging in age, race/ethnicity, gender, and backgrounds. Please join UMW Green Zone volunteers in the Magnolia Room of the University Center on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from noon to 1:30 p.m. for veterans awareness training. The session will begin with a panel of student veterans providing their perspective on transitioning from the military to a college campus, and will then be followed by an open discussion on working with student veterans and service members to assist them with the transition to student life
As of this past spring, Virginia ranked fourth in states with the most active duty and reserve members of the military. It’s imperative that UMW staff and faculty educate themselves about working with student veterans and service members.
