The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. A service will be held there at noon on Friday. Volunteer And Cheer On Half Marathon Runners, Sunday, May 20
Get your race on! Once again, UMW is a proud sponsor of the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon on Sunday, May 20. Nearly 9,000 runners will hit the pavement around our campus, and we want to welcome and cheer them. Get into the fervor by handing out water at the official Mary Washington Water Station, near the intersection of Sunken Road and William Street. We need volunteers from 6 to 10 a.m. on race day.
We also need volunteer UMW ambassadors at the Half-Marathon headquarters and registration center at the Fredericksburg Expo Center on Friday, May 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. or Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. We will be handing out information about the school along with towels with our logo. It’s a great way to meet people from all over the country and spread the good news about the place where great minds get to work!
If you are interested in volunteering, contact Kelly Eury, marketing assistant, at keury@umw.edu. Please indicate which day and time you prefer. UMW t-shirts are available for volunteers.

Theft Alert
The following message is from the UMW Police:
Dear Fredericksburg Campus Colleagues:
Yesterday afternoon (Thursday, April 26) around 4:09 p.m., a theft occurred in George Washington Hall involving the removal of a wallet from a first floor office.
The UMW employee left her office, closed the office door, and crossed the hallway to the restroom. As she crossed, she noticed an individual standing at the north side entrance door to the building. Once in the restroom, the employee heard the door to her office opening (It is very noisy when opened.) She quickly left the restroom to investigate and saw that the office door was closed. The employee did not see anyone in the hallway. Upon entering her office she checked her personal belongings and found that her wallet was missing from a bag under the desk.
University Police were called and the employee immediately cancelled her credit cards. The thief attempted to use a credit card but it was declined at the Rt. 3 Staples just prior to 4:24 p.m. and the Rt. 3 Shell gas station at 4:26 p.m. The suspect is described as: black male, 5’10” to 6’0,” medium build, dark complexion, wearing a red athletic jersey and dark pants.
With the increasing number of groups using our facilities, we have more foot traffic through all buildings. I would ask all Fredericksburg Campus faculty and staff to reflect upon your everyday habits to promote personal safety and reduce opportunity for crime.
Consider the following:
• Do I routinely lock my office?
• Are my keys safe and under my control at all times?
• Are valuables kept on my person or in a locked drawer?
• Do I stay aware of my surroundings?
• Do I lock my car, keeping any valuables out of sight?
• Do I notice and report individuals or circumstances that seem out of place?
[Call UMW POLICE x4444]
Although some crime is unavoidable, we can collectively seize opportunities to make our campus community safer by reflecting upon our daily routines and habits.
Small changes can go a long way.
Sincerely, Chief Eddie Perry UMW Police

Order Splitting Prohibition. The placement of multiple orders within other than a reasonable time period to one or more vendors for the same, like, or related goods or services to avoid using the appropriate method of procurement or to remain within delegated purchasing authority is prohibited.

PARKING UPDATE – CONVERGENCE CENTER CONSTRUCTION
We have received several communications regarding the ITCC project and its impact on campus traffic patterns.
To reiterate what has been shared:
ITCC “early phase” of the construction project is underway (from roughly the end of March to the end of May), two parking spots behind the Library and four spots behind Pollard Hall will be lost. Also, the handicapped spaces near Jepson Hall will be closed – this area is being enlarged from the current two handicapped spaces to a total of seven spaces. These new spaces will be open after May 2012. There might be a need to temporarily eliminate one space in the Jepson lot to facilitate some truck traffic while the temporary construction road is built. (It is not entirely clear if this will be required at this point.)

Update on State General Assembly Budget
Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to update you on the state budget passed by the General Assembly on April 18, 2012 for the next biennium (7/1/2012 – 6/30/ 2014). While still needing approval from the Governor, very little is expected to change. In particular, here are some highlights of actions affecting the University of Mary Washington:
- 3% bonus for faculty and staff: Funding for a bonus of up to 3% effective December 1, 2012, has been approved contingent upon available state revenues. The bonus may be prorated downward based on the actual level of revenue balances.
- 2% permanent pay increase for faculty and staff: Funding for a permanent salary increase effective July 10, 2013, has been approved contingent upon state revenue collections. A pay increase will be provided if there are no downward revisions to the state general fund estimates prepared prior to the start of the 2012 General Assembly and, if within 5 days of the 2012-13 state year-end close, a revenue re-forecast is not required.
- New state operating budget support: The state budget includes a permanent increase of $1.1 million to offset base operating costs, to support in-state enrollment growth and retention and for support of academic programs in sciences, math and computer science.
- Dahlgren operating budget: Additional state funding of $650,000 has been recommended for 2012-13 to annualize the operating budget for the Dahlgren Education and Research Center. This brings total state support to $1,900,000, which is anticipated to decline as the Center generates revenue from other sources, including classroom and facilities rental opportunities.
- Student financial assistance: The budget includes an increase of $25,447 in state funding to support need-based aid for undergraduate students.
- Renovation of Woodard and Mercer Halls: The state budget authorizes the university to move forward with detailed planning for the renovation of these two buildings, which will provide permanent space for departments currently located in Chandler Hall.
- Jepson Science Center Addition: The state budget identifies the Jepson Science Center Addition as “next on the list” for funds for planning once the current group of state projects in the planning phase move to construction. This is a major positive step in the state capital outlay process in moving this project forward.
I hope this summary is helpful. A more detailed report may be found on the Budget Office webpage at: http://adminfinance.umw.edu/budget/files/2012/01/Conference-summary-2012.pdf

Destination Days
Hello UMW Campus Community:
On Wednesday, April 18, and Friday, April 20, the Office of Admissions will be holding Destination UMW programs for admitted students. The latest registration numbers indicate that close to 150 admitted students and about 300 total visitors will join us on campus each of those days!
The Destination Day schedule includes events and activities for our visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., although we expect our guests to begin arriving on campus earlier in the morning. Expect to see increased foot traffic on campus and a large amount of visitors in the campus dining facilities. Our visitors have been instructed to park in the parking garage, but with the amount of people we expect to attend they will most likely need to seek other parking options throughout campus and on neighboring side streets.
Hopefully this information will allow you to plan accordingly for those days. Please help us in welcoming our visitors to the University of Mary Washington.
Sincerely,
The UMW Office of Admissions
