Call for University Annual Awards Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the following University annual awards: 

v  Charles Coleman Memorial Service Award (supervisor nominations only)

v  Richard V. and Rosemary A. Hurley Presidential Commendation

v  Staff Advisory Council’s Larry Atkins Staff Awards

These prestigious awards will be presented at a University Awards Ceremony to be held in Dodd Auditorium before the annual Employee Appreciation picnic on Monday, May 13, 2013. 

The deadline for submitting nominations for all awards is 5:00 pm on Friday, April 19, 2013.

• Charles Coleman Memorial Service Award(supervisor nominations only): Charles Coleman was an employee of 29 years who demonstrated pride, dedication, and loyalty throughout his many years of service. This award was established in honor of his memory and exemplary service.  All classified and hourly employees with at least 5 years of continuous employment are eligible for the award. 

•  Richard V. and Rosemary A. Hurley Presidential Commendation The intent of this award is to honor Mr. and Mrs. Hurley, who have consistently demonstrated a desire to recognize and reward outstanding service of University employees, and who have led by example in their work at Mary Washington.  The benefactors of the award are Elmer and Marceline Weatherly Morris, Class of 1950. Eligibility for this award is open to UMW employees, with preference for administrative/professional faculty members.

• Staff Advisory Council’s Larry Atkins Staff AwardsThe Staff Advisory Council recognizes UMW employees who are the unsung heroes of our offices.  Larry Atkins was one of the first employees to receive the S.A.C. “We Couldn’t Do it Without You Award,” which has since been renamed in his memory. Any administrative faculty, wage, and/or classified employee may be nominated. Three UMW employees will be selected, one from each of the above classifications.

Dear UMW Faculty, Staff, and Students,

The Strategic Resource Allocation Study, of which you have heard much in my prior messages, is kicking off in earnest next week. The Academic Task Force and the Support Task Force will be meeting with Larry Goldstein, President and CEO of Campus Strategies, beginning on Sunday, March 24 and continuing through Tuesday, March 26. During those sessions, the task forces will meet privately to make key decisions regarding their upcoming work on the UMW study.

On Wednesday, March 27, Mr. Goldstein will hold two open information sessions for interested members of the UMW community. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend one of these sessions to learn more about the Strategic Resource Allocation Study and to have any questions answered.

The first session will begin at 12:00 noon in Lee Hall, room 411, on the Fredericksburg campus. The second session will begin at 3:00 p.m. in University Hall on the Stafford campus. Each session is expected to last an hour or so.

Dear UMW Faculty, Students, Administration, and Staff:

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU) and the Bringing Theory to Practice Project has awarded University of Mary Washington a 2012-2014 Civic Engagement seminar grant. The purpose of our seminar grant is to bring together UMW members of the UMW campus community along with local community members to explore and strengthen the role of civic engagement within UMW and within the broader community.  We would like you to consider participating!

Our grant, “Civic Engagement: Recasting and Drawing Upon a Wider Net” and will be directed by Dr. Mary Kayler (Director, Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation), Dr. John P. Broome (Assistant Professor, College of Education) and Ms. Christina Eggenberger (Director of Service, Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service).

Participation in our Civic Engagement Seminar would include:

* Completing a short reading on civic engagement in higher education (approximately 20 pages).

* Attending two Civic Engagement Seminar Grant Meetings (listed below)

* Be an active participant in discussions about civic engagement at the University.

* RSVP your intent to participate.

After the seminars, interested participants who wish to continue with the initiative will be entirely optional.

TELEWORK AWARENESS WEEK

MARCH 4 -8, 2013  

The State celebrates Telework Awareness Week this week (March 4-8). It is an ideal time for employees and supervisors to discuss teleworking options. 

Supervisors and Employees can start by taking time to: 

• Read through the UMW Telework Policy and Procedure webpage, including the “Do’s and Don’ts of teleworking” and “Supervisor Tips”    (http://adminfinance.umw.edu/hr/policies-and-procedures/telework-policy/ ) as well as the State Policy at: (http://www.dhrm.state.va.us/hrpolicy/web/pol1_61.pdf).
• Discuss whether a specific position is suited for teleworking.
• Discuss timing and impact of teleworking on office operations.
• If teleworking is viable,  agree on terms and complete a telework agreement and send it to the HR office.

Did You Know? 

• Working from home increases productivity on average 10-20%.
• Teleworking contributes significantly to energy conservation.
• Research shows that teleworking is a desirable employee benefit that leads to higher employee satisfaction.
