Spring Break parking

The following message is from Parking Management:

Due to the possibility of inclement weather, all vehicles that remain on campus during the Spring Break should be parked in the covered floors of the Alvey Drive parking deck, Sunken Road lot # 11, and for Eagle Landing residents, the covered floors of that deck.

In the event of a Snow Emergency Declaration, all other lots/areas will need to be clear of vehicles, this includes Fac/Staff vehicles and any UMW assigned Pool/Service Vehicles-please move these vehicles to the above mentioned areas, and follow any other Declaration instructions.

Contact the Parking Management Office with any questions.

2013 General Assembly Actions on the Budget

On February 23, 2013, the General Assembly adopted amendments to the budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.  The next step in the process is the Governor’s review and approval or veto.  I do not anticipate any line-item vetoes related to higher education.

Overall, the actions of the Governor and the General Assembly have resulted in a solid budget for higher education and for the University of Mary Washington.  A couple of key points on the operating budget.  First, permanent salary increases have been approved for faculty and staff.  Faculty will receive a 3% salary increase effective July 25, 2013, while classified staff and wage employees will receive a 2% increase.  In addition, classified employees with five or more years of continuous state service will be eligible for a permanent salary increase equal to $65 for each year of eligible service up to thirty years.

Second, additional general funds totaling $288,000 have been recommended to help fund base operating support costs and other institutional priorities.

Third, general fund support through the Higher Education Equipment Trust Fund (HEETF) remains steady next year at $529,000.

Finally, new state funding of $76,000 for need-based student financial aid for Virginia students has been recommended, bringing total general fund support for this program to $2,572,000.

In the capital budget, funding for maintenance reserve projects is held constant at $563,000.  In addition, UMW is authorized to move forward on the renovation projects for Woodard and Mercer Halls, which will house the College of Business and the Department of Psychology, respectively.

For your reference, attached is a side-by-side comparison of actions of the Governor, House, Senate and Conference Committee on the budget.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the General Assembly’s budget actions.  I will communicate any additional information on the budget as it becomes available.

New N:, U: and other Shared Drives

All UMW Faculty and Staff,

The IT Department will install a new File & Printer server environment this weekend.  This means that what most of you know as “the shared drive” or “the N: or U: drives” will be moved to new server hardware.

There are several important aspects of this project that I want you to be aware of:

– the deadline for making any changes to files on the shared drives is 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 2.  All items stored on the shared drives before 5:00 PM on Saturday will be moved to the new server automatically.  Any edits made to files or files added to the shared drives after this deadline will be lost.

The old server will go down at 9:00 AM on Sunday, March 3rd, and the new hardware is expected to be installed and available for your use starting at 7:00 PM Sunday evening.  During this time there will be no access to shared drives.

For most users, the mapping of the new drives on your computer will be automatic, but there may be the need for some users to re-map network drives after the upgrade work is complete.  More detailed information on how to do this will be sent later in the week, and Help Desk staff will be standing by next week to assist with any issues.

If you have questions or concerns about this system upgrade, please contact the Help Desk at 540-654-2255, helpdesk@umw.edu, or you may contact me directly.

Thanks for your patience as we perform this work,

Jerry
