The UMW Fitness Center will be open from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9. The Fitness Center will be closed on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11. Regular hours will resume on Monday, March 12.

Seacobeck Hall will reopen for dinner on Sunday, March 11 and The Eagle’s Nest and Joe Stacks will reopen at 4p.m. Naturally Woodstock and Jazzman’s Cafe & Bakery will be open for regular hours starting Monday, March 12.

Dear UMW Faculty and Staff,

In support of the University’s efforts to maintain a respectful work environment and in some cases, our compliance with state and federal guidance, all full time and part-time faculty and staff are asked to complete each of the following  5-15 minute, online, policy related courses by March 30, 2012.

Supervisors and department chairs are asked to complete the separate and more detailed curriculum due to their greater responsibility for the establishment  and maintainance of work environments that are both respectful and legally compliant. For purposes of this training, supervisors are defined as anyone who supervises one or more part-time or full time employees.  A description of the courses within each curriculum is listed below. A checklist for supervisors is available here as a reminder to refer to after the training is complete. Supervisors and department chairs are only required to complete the Supervisor curriculum.

ACCESSING THE CURRICULUM IN THE KNOWLEDGE CENTER

Login and Passwords: The 2012 Required Training curricula are available online through the UMW Knowledge Center, https://covkc.virginia.gov/UMW. All faculty and staff who previously participated in a course in the Knowledge Center should already have a login and password. If you forgot your login and/or password, you can request that it be sent to you via email, by clicking on the “Forgot Login” and/or “Forgot Password” link from the UMW Login page.

For those who have never used the Knowledge Center, please register using these instructions.

Note to Adjunct Faculty:  Adjuncts new to the University this academic year should contact Judy Kwitnieski or Lynne Lee for access. Adjuncts who participated in the online information security training last spring should already have logins and passwords.

Viewing the Courses: Please plan to view the courses at a time that best meets your schedule.  If it is easier to view courses together in a meeting, the supervisor or chair should send us the names of the meeting participants and we will enter their completion. Over the past few weeks several UMW users have fallen victim to email SPAM or Phishing attempts. Providing your account information or clicking a link in an email from an unknown sender or in a suspicious email from a known sender not only can compromise your account – it cancause problems and delays to the entire UMW email system. For example, email messages that are being sent to off-campus email addresses are currently at risk for having their delivery delayed – or possibly blocked.  Conversely, incoming emails may also be delayed.

UMW IT and other reputable organizations will never ask you to confirm your account information through email.

Users who give out account information via email allow spammers and/or criminals to access their accounts either to send additional SPAM through our email system to internal and external users or access the content of your mailbox.  This is a serious security concern.  Furthermore, external email providers may elect to blacklist the umw.edu domain preventing email messages to be sent to or received from external senders including students.  Mailboxes that are used to send SPAM will be immediately suspended and users will be contacted so we can work to properly secure the account.

Below is additional information on what we are doing and what you can do to protect the UMW email system.

Here’s how we protect you:

• SPAM filtering. UMW IT utilizes a robust industry-standard SPAM filtering utility. While the SPAM filter or junk mail settings may occasionally catch legitimate email, they block email that can compromise your account and computer.  We typically block over 80 percent of incoming email messages as spam per day.
• Password reset requirement. Our additional password requirements help to safeguard your account.  For more information on setting a secure password please visit:http://technology.umw.edu/information-security/passwords/
• Anti-virus, security awareness training, and SPAM/Phishing alerts. These are designed to keep your computer secure and you informed.

Here’s how you can protect yourself:

• Verify that emails are from a trusted sender.  Do not reply to emails from unknown senders that ask for personal information or attempt to get you to click a link.  Do not click on links from unknown senders.
• Allow your anti-virus updates to run.  This is the last line of protection for your computer.  Run full and quick scans on your PC using the installed Symantec Anti-Virus program.  If you need assistance, please contact the Help Desk  at HelpDesk@umw.edu or (540) 654-2255
• Report suspicious emails. Suspicious emails or concerns about your account being compromised should be reported immediately to it-abuse@umw.edu.

Mary Washington Healthcare Rejoins Anthem Provider Network

Good news!  Anthem has signed a new three-year Letter of Agreement with Mary Washington Healthcare.  The agreement was effective February 1, 2012, for the state COVA Care plan and COVA HDHP. Mary Washington Healthcare facilities, including Mary Washington Hospital, Stafford Hospital, Fredericksburg Ambulatory Surgical Center and Snowden at Fredericksburg, which had been considered out of network effective January 1, 2012, are now back in the Anthem network.

Members with questions may call the Anthem number found on the back of their COVA Care or COVA HDHP ID cards.

The 2011 W-2 Wage and Tax Statement is now available on Payline. The Payline web address is https://payline.doa.virginia.gov/ . After logging in, go to Main Menu, W-2 History to access the statement. A paper copy of the statement will be mailed to your home address later this month. If you have not accessed Payline before, you will need to request a temporary password. The Payroll section of the UMW website has instructions for accessing Payline.
