UMW Community Forum: Save the date and make plans to attend the UMW Community Forum on Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium.  President Paino will give us an update on the engagement assessment, the budget outlook, and UMW’s plan for the future.

All-America Emma Olson is Wagner Wealth Management Athlete of the Month

Senior volleyball All-American Emma Olson has been named as the UMW Wagner Wealth Management Athlete of the Month for November.

Olson is pictured here with Aric Wagner, senior vice president, investments, of Davenport & Company LLC.

Olson gained All-America honors, as well as first team all-region and all-conference accolades after leading Mary Washington’s volleyball team to its furthest advancement in the NCAA Tournament ever, advancing all the way to the national quarterfinals, and finishing 31-4 overall after claiming the CAC Championship.

Giving Remains Strong at UMW

UMW alumni, parents, and friends continue to support students, programs, and special projects at Mary Washington. In the past few weeks, University Advancement has proudly accepted and processed hundreds of gifts, including the following:

  • A total of $20,500 in new gifts for the Amphitheatre restoration. This includes $15,000 from an alumna of the Class of 1968, as well as gifts from members of the classes of 1973, 1975, and 1979.
  • A $7,500 gift for men’s soccer from an alumnus of the Class of 1984.
  • A $1 million estate pledge from a legacy alumna of the Class of 1958 to endow a scholarship as a tribute to her mother – an alumna from the Class of 1919. When funded, this new legacy scholarship will be awarded to qualified students in the Department of History and American Studies.

University Advancement is preparing for last-minute gifts as the 2016 calendar year comes to a close. If you have contact with donors, please advise them that all checks must be dated by December 31, 2016, and that all envelopes must be postmarked by December 31, 2016, to count for 2016 charitable tax deductions.

Museums Offer Free Holiday Admission

While you are unwinding during the holiday break, bring the whole family for a visit to the James Monroe Museum and to Gari Melchers Home and Studio!

belmont-home-for-the-holidays-2Both sites are extending free admission to include the immediate family members of current University of Mary Washington faculty and staff during the break, from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2. We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to visit this wonderful pair of cultural resources administered by UMW.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The James Monroe Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, but will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Giving Tuesday Exceeded Goal!

We did it! Thanks to the incredible efforts of so many people, we exceeded our goal of 200 donors for the Nov. 29 Giving Tuesday event, a global day dedicated to philanthropy.

We received 228 gifts from 224 donors in 21 states , including:

  • 47 young alumni (graduates of the last decade)
  • 31 reunion alumni (class years ending in 2 and 7)
  • 50 parents of current UMW students
  • 11 faculty and staff

Donors gave a total of $45,550, and $22,143 of that was in unrestricted giving to the Fund for Mary Washington. Of the 224 donors, 164 designated their gifts to the Fund for Mary Washington–a great show of support for the University’s mission and leadership. Sixty donors gave to other UMW causes, including academic departments, athletic teams, scholarships, the Amphitheatre restoration, and more.

Thank you to all who made a gift or signed up to give through payroll deduction in honor of Giving Tuesday!

Staff Advisory Council News

Faculty/Staff Dining. Let’s do lunch! The Faculty Staff Dining Room is open in the University Center Chandler Ballroom Monday through Friday, 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The regular lunch cost is $6 for faculty and staff. Help promote faculty and staff camaraderie and foster the sense of community that is such an important attribute of Mary Washington.

Engagement Assessment Survey. The Engagement Assessment Committee presented Engagement Assessment Survey findings to the Leadership Council in October. The Leadership Council and Leadership UMW 2016 held a joint extended action planning meeting, which resulted in newly instituted protocol for all faculty and staff to receive the SAC newsletter and the Provost newsletter in an effort to improve community communication.  President Paino will offer an update and action steps at the Community Forum to be held in Dodd Auditorium on Jan. 19 at 4 p.m.
