UMW Dahlgren Campus Sponsors Days of Caring Team

The UMW Dahlgren campus, in support of the Rappahannock United Way’s second annual King George Days of Caring, invites you to join Team UMW Dahlgren as a volunteer on Thursday, October 20. You’ll join other UMW volunteers who will invest their time and energy to assist a Rappahannock United Way member agency complete a project that is valuable to the agency and meaningful to the agency’s clients.  Classified staff, with supervisor approval, may take one day (8 hours) of paid School Assistance and Volunteer Leave. Administrative/Professional Faculty, with supervisor approval, may take one day (8 hours) of Leave to Provide Community Service.

Woodland Walk at Belmont this Sunday

A woodland hike will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont.

Virginia Master Naturalist volunteers lead this informative hike that covers a mile of trails in both woodlands and fields and touches on the historic ruins of Belmont’s past.  Please wear sturdy footwear as the terrain in uneven.  Meet outside the Visitor Center. Free.

A Brand New U

A Brand New U! Not necessarily a new university, but UMW is changing its image, and we want everyone in the campus community to hear all about it. The two dynamic leaders of Educational Marketing Group (EMG), Bob and Marlene Brock, will spearhead a couple of sessions next week that will provide a sneak peek into the makeover and how it came about. By the way, mark your calendars for the afternoon of Oct. 7 for a campus-wide pep rally; details to come!  Everyone on campus should try to attend one of the following two sessions; the information will be extremely helpful to all departments in moving forward. UMW Staff Volunteer at Day of Caring

Two teams of University of Mary Washington staff traded in their desks and computers for paint brushes and shovels as volunteers at the Day of Caring on Thursday, September 15.

A total of 28 volunteers, 16 from Student Affairs and 12 from Advancement and University Relations, spent the morning cleaning, painting and landscaping for local agencies.

The team from Student Affairs volunteered at Thurman Brisben Center and Fredericksburg Area HIV/AIDS Support Services while the team from Advancement and University Relations volunteered at the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Services Council.

This is the second year that a group from Mary Washington has volunteered with the Day of Caring, a project of Rappahannock United Way.

Dr. Robert Hobbs to Present Lecture at UMW Galleries

The UMW Galleries are pleased to host Dr. Robert Hobbs, renowned late modern and post-modern art historian, for “The Contemporary Sublime,” the first of the Galleries’ Fall 2011 Lecture Series. The lecture, presented in conjunction with the Ridderhof Martin Gallery’s current exhibition Art & Nature: Reflections on the Sublime, will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 2 – 3 PM in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery.

Dr. Robert Hobbs has held the Rhoda Thalhimer Endowed Chair at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1991 and has been a visiting professor at Yale University since 2004. He has been published widely and has curated dozens of exhibitions, many of which have been shown at important institutions in the U.S. and abroad. “The Contemporary Sublime,” as well as the Galleries’ other lectures in the series, are free and open to the public. However, pre-registration is required to ensure sufficient seating. World Premiere Performance of 9/11 Memorial Concert

The world premiere performance of “Donated By Cantor Fitzgerald,” a new composition and CD release for live improvising musicians and electronic elements, will take place on Saturday, September 10 from 7:30 – 9 p.m. The concert will be held in Pollard Hall, Room 304. The concert is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Recorded electroacoustic elements include performances by Tim Hopkins, tenor saxophone and Colin Hemmingsen, bass clarinet.

Sarah Ferguson was in New York’s Times Square the morning of September 11, 2001, appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America, when terrorists flew hijacked planes into the World Trade Center. Her charity, Chances for Children, was located on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center, where she was late for a meeting. None of the charity’s employees were trapped in the building but nearly 700 employees of Cantor Fitzgerald, the financial firm providing free office space to the duchess’ charity, were killed in the aftermath of the attack.

The recording of this work and this performance have been made possible through the financial support of Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), the New Zealand School of Music and the University of Mary Washington.

The world broadcast premiere of the full hour of “Donated By Cantor Fitzgerald” will take place on September 11, 2011 as part of a 24-hour marathon for contemporary art music written as memorials to the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, heard on WPRB in Princeton, N.J., and hosted by Marvin Rosen.

Simpson Library Book Loaned to University of Virginia

A rare 1537 book from Simpson Library’s Special Collections holdings is currently on loan to the University of Virginia Art Museum for its exhibit, “Variety, Archeology, and Ornament: Renaissance Architectural Prints from Column to Cornice.” Titled “Regole generali di architetture sopra le cinque maniere degli edifice,” the book is written by the renowned Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio.

The exhibit focuses on the crucial role of prints in the transition from manuscript to printed architectural treatises during the Renaissance. Along with the library’s loan and the museum’s own holdings, the curators selected pieces from various other repositories, such as The Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Yale Center for British Art, noting that “the exhibition affords a unique opportunity for the study of rare books and prints drawn from several national libraries.” The exhibition will be on view at the University of Virginia Art Museum through December 18, 2011.

Carolyn Diehl Named Excellent Eagle Employee

Congratulations to Carolyn Diehl, special projects coordinator in the Office of University Events and Conferencing, who has been selected as an Excellent Eagle Employee by the Staff Advisory Council. To thank you for such a wonderful job, Carolyn will have a reserved parking spot of her choosing through Friday, September 30th.
