In early March, Professor of History and American Studies Jeff McClurken, who also serves as the Chief of Staff and Clerk of the Board of Visitors, was invited to present on Digital Humanities and Southern History at the University of Alabama, as well as to talk with graduate students about how to integrate digital tools into their teaching and research.

McClurken Co-Authors Chapter on Undergraduate Research in Humanities

Jeffrey McClurken, Professor of History and American Studies & Chief of Staff, recently published a co-authored chapter on “Undergraduate Research in the Humanities” in High-Impact Practices in Online Education: Research and Best Practices.  Co-written with Ellen Holmes Pearson of UNC, Asheville, the chapter explores the landscape of digitally enabled undergraduate research in the humanities.  In particular, it details the ways that integrating digital humanities projects into online classes increases engagement, captures many of strengths of the traditional liberal arts classroom, and trains students in an outward-facing approach to undergraduate research.

Outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently announced appointments to the Board of Regents of the James Monroe Law Office Museum and Memorial Library. Among the appointments from UMW are Porter Blakemore, associate professor of history;  Jeffrey W. McClurken, professor of history and special adviser to the UMW president; Rita Thompson of Fairfax, director of Rappahannock Scholars Program and a retired Fairfax County School Board member. Davis Publishes Book and Article

Janine S. Davis, assistant professor in the College of Education, has published a text titled Building a Professional Teaching Identity on Social Media: A Digital Constellation of Selves. The text was initiated during her work on the Digital Scholars Institute in 2014-15 and was completed during her Jepson fellowship year in 2015-16. The text features a foreword by Martha Burtis, director of the Digital Knowledge Center. Also in the text are mentions of the Domain of One’s Own project and citations from both an interview with Jeffrey McClurken, professor of History & American Studies and Special Assistant to the Provost for Teaching, Technology, and Innovation, and work by Zach Whalen, associate professor of English.

Davis also published an article with a colleague, Victoria Fantozzi, in the journal Mentoring and Tutoring. The article, “What Do Student Teachers Want in Mentor Teachers?: Desired, Expected, Possible, and Emerging Roles” will be published in the fall, but an online version is available at http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/XcegWJ89ZPz8W6TnWrjR/full

McClurken Keynotes Digital Liberal Arts Event in Minnesota

On May 17-18, Jeffrey McClurken, Professor of History and American Studies and Special Assistant to the Provost, presented the keynote address, “Claiming a Future for the Digital Liberal Arts,” at the Spring Digital Liberal Arts Workshop for Macalester College and the University of Minnesota.  He also co-led a two-day workshop on Digital Pedagogy.
