Construction update on Virginia Hall

The following message is from Facilities Services:

Work has begun at Virginia Hall to install the roof balustrade. There will likely be some disruption to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the vicinity of Lee Hall Circle and Virginia Hall while material is offloaded and moved to the site.

Work hours at Virginia Hall will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as weather permits. Working hours and logistics for the project have been coordinated with Residence Life and Housing. The roof work is expected to continue through November.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation with this work as we put the finishing touches on a renovated Virginia Hall. Please send any questions or concerns to Jay Sullivan, Capital Outlay Project Manager, at dsulliva@umw.edu or 540-379-3422.

Sellers Attends Virginia Tribal Nations Inaugural Sovereignty Conference

Associate Professor of History Jason Sellers

Associate Professor of History Jason Sellers was mentioned in The Free Lance-Star article entitled, “Virginia’s federally recognized tribes begin drafting a sovereignty accord.” Dr. Sellers was present at the inaugural Sovereignty Conference for federally recognized tribal nations in Virginia, along with scholars from Virginia Tech and the University of Richmond, who were there to make presentations confirming centuries of broken treaties and erasure by Virginia and the federal government. October Safe Zone tabling events

On October 20, from 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the lobby of the UC we will be celebrating International Pronouns Day. On that day, we will be making pronoun buttons in recognition of how important it is to respect others’ pronouns and to share our own pronouns. All are welcome. We will be giving out stickers and buttons.

UMW to Celebrate National Day on Writing

The Department of English & Linguistics, along with Simpson Library, student-run literary magazine The Aubade, and the UMW Creative Writing Club will be sponsoring an event encouraging students to write on October 20 – National Day on Writing. The event will include tables at various locations across campus where free swag will be given away, and the student organizations will be able to promote their clubs by hosting writing activities. Also, look out around campus for three-word prompts for “bad haikus.” If you write and tweet your haikus and tag @UMWLibraries, you will be entered for a chance to win a prize! Students, staff, and faculty alike are welcome to participate in this awesome event that encourages us to write something, even if it’s bad! We hope to see you at the event, and we can’t wait to read your haikus!

Kenny Horning named October Excellent Eagle Employee

Congratulations to Kenny Horning! Kenny is USC’s Excellent Eagle Employee for the month of October. Below is what Gregg Stull had to say about Kenny:

“Kenny is focused on creating an environment in which students are challenged and succeed while also meeting the many deadlines associated with producing theatre at UMW. He is always willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure that we fulfill our mission to our campus and regional communities and can be found in Klein Theatre long after the day has ended and on weekends leading to production openings. Kenny takes on projects beyond the scope of his day-to-day responsibilities because he recognizes that they will help us to reach the excellence we seek. He is always, always eager to help whoever needs him.”

Farnsworth, Seltzer and Burkley Present Research Paper on Political Humor

Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, Kate Seltzer, a 2021 graduate of UMW with degrees in Political Science and in Communication and Digital Studies, and Sally Burkley, a senior Political Science and Communication and Digital Studies double major at UMW, are coauthors of a research paper entitled, “Winning (and Losing) on Late Night: Political Humor and the 2020 Presidential Campaign,” which was presented recently at the American Political Science Association Pre-conference in Political Communication [online].

Stop Hunger Campaigns Launch

Stop Hunger University Dining/Sodexo, the University Staff Council, UMW Athletes, and local businesses and churches are partnering together to host our annual Stop Hunger Food Drive, from October 13 through November 1, and they are looking for your support. All of the food and monetary donations will go to benefit the UMW Eagle Resource Closet and the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.

Anyone wishing to support the drive with food, monetary, or meal plan/Flex donations will find details on the University Dining web site.

Swipe Out Hunger Meal Plan University Dining/Sodexo has donated 3,600 meals to create a new Swipe Out Hunger meal plan for the benefit of UMW students experiencing food insecurity. This new plan will be administered by the University Host, Chris Porter, with assistance from Leslie Martin, who coordinates the Eagle Resource Closet, Patty Land in the EagleOne Card office, and with Rose Benedict, the University Dining/Sodexo Swipe Out Hunger champion. Chris has established a Google nomination form that students can use to apply for meals through the Swipe Out Hunger meal plan. When approved, these students will have meals loaded onto their EagleOne cards, and they will be able to swipe in at the Top of the UC in the same way all other students who are on meal plans swipe in. There will be nothing in the process that identifies these students as being recipients of meal assistance. All information is kept confidential.

Everyone who has been working to bring this new assistance option to UMW is eager to have any and all students who need nutritional support apply for these meals. Please help spread the word about the availability of this new dining plan to your friends, colleagues and students.

The University of Mary Washington Galleries is pleased to present Where Earth Meets Sky: Reflections on Nature from UMW’s Permanent Collection. This exhibition features landscape scenes in a variety of media, including works by Chase Chen, Brett Livingstone-Strong, and Herb Jackson. Created by UMW Interns Andrew Elliott, Carolyn Riley, Madeline Williams, Meredith Glasco, and Sophia Maldonado, this show aims to provide a space for the viewer to contemplate their relationship with nature. These seniors from the Department of Art History and Department of Historic Preservation hope to engage the UMW and larger Fredericksburg communities with these works, reminding viewers of the power of nature and the importance of creating experiences within it.

UMW Galleries is pleased to present Dan Finnegan–Potter, a solo exhibition by the celebrated local artist, in duPont Gallery from October 28 through December 5. This exciting show documents Dan’s 40 years as a potter in Fredericksburg Virginia, featuring pottery and sculpture from throughout this time period. While Finnegan has lived and worked in Fredericksburg since 1980, this is the first retrospective exhibition of his work at the University of Mary Washington. Several events will coincide with the show, including a reception on October 28th from 5-7 p.m., and a lecture by the artist on October 29th at 12 noon in the Hurley Convergence Center and via Zoom (check www.umwgalleries.org for the link).
