Important Notice to the UMW Community On Monday, March 19 at 10:14 p.m., UMW Police were notified of an incident in Eagle Landing involving a student in possession of a handgun. Campus police responded to the scene immediately, addressed the student, and quickly determined that no ammunition was present and confiscated the gun. The University Police assessment indicated the incident posed no ongoing threat to Eagle Landing or the University community, therefore a UMW alert was not issued. The student has been placed on interim suspension, pending an administrative hearing. While the situation did not necessitate a campus alert, the University considers any incident involving a gun to be a serious matter. According to UMW’s Code of Conduct, no student may keep, use, possess, display, or carry any lethal or dangerous devices. An investigation is continuing.

This 10 minute survey is completely anonymous and individual responses will not be shared with anyone. Summarized ratings and a summary of written comments will be presented to Dean Finkelstein, Provost Harper, and President Hurley. As you complete the survey, if you feel strongly that you are not familiar enough to provide feedback on the performance metrics, please feel free to indicate by selecting appropriate option. Earlier I announced that I would be moving forward to contract for an interim provost who will serve UMW through the 2012-2013 academic year.  I further announced that it is my intention to have this individual in place not later than the end of April, 2012.  I am writing at this time to provide additional information about the interim provost selection process. 

I have engaged the services of the Registry for College and University Presidents to assist in placing an experienced and highly skilled administrator in the position.  Founded in 1992, the Registry is the nation’s premier interim placement service for presidents and other senior university administrators.  Registry interims cannot become candidates for the permanent position.  For additional information about the Registry and its unique services, you may visit the following website:  http://www.registry-online.org/ 

On Tuesday, April 3, 2012, three candidates for the interim provost position will be visiting UMW.  During their visits, opportunities will be provided for all interested faculty and staff to meet the candidates.  Open meetings with the candidates will be held on April 3 at 8:30-9:30 a.m., 10:00-11:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in George Washington Hall’s Dodd Auditorium on the Fredericksburg campus.  Information about the candidates will be provided on Friday, March 30. 

Written feedback from the University community will be invited at the conclusion of each of these open meetings.  The final executive decision to select the interim provost will fall to me as president and I will announce the selection as soon as possible following the candidates’ visits.

Ruby Lee Norris, 96, of Topping, Va., died on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. She was a 1936 alumna from the University of Mary Washington.  Read full obituary at www.legacy.com/obituaries/timesdispatch/obituary.aspx?n=ruby-norris&pid=156391559.

The following message is from the Office of the Provost:  

Construction on the Convergence Center building is scheduled to begin shortly.  The building will be located on campus walk, next to the Library.  Some preliminary site work is scheduled to start in mid to late March.  Groundbreaking for the project is set for mid May — after Commencement exercises.  A number of details about the building and construction plans may be found at:
