In an effort to collect thousands of pounds of food to feed the hungry in our communities, Eagle Dining and Sodexo, Inc. are again sponsoring a campus and community-wide food drive, “Helping Hands Across America” during the month of November.

Eagle Dining will be placing collection bins in all dining locations, selling canned goods at reduced prices at lunch time during the week of November 7, sponsoring contests for campus residence halls, clubs, and athletic teams, and holding a curb-side donation drop-off on November 14.

How can you help?

1. Attend our food drive kick-off in Ball Circle on Monday, November 7 from 5pm-7pm. Meet with representatives from the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, pick up collection boxes for your residence hall, and volunteer your time for our curbside donation event on Monday, November 14.

2. Donate non-perishable food items within their expiration dates, such as canned soups, meats, vegetables and fruit, or bags of pasta and rice.

3. Place donation boxes in your classroom, office, or other work area.

4. Volunteer one hour of time to help with our curb side donation event (12pm – 6pm on Monday, November 14).

5. Volunteer to help collect filled donation boxes. All of the food items collected will be donated to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank and other local charities to help the hungry right here in the Fredericksburg area. Please lend a hand to help those in need! Be a part of “Helping Hands Across America”!

The location for today’s blood drive has been moved to Dodd Auditorium Foyer. The blood drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. 

Walk-ins are welcome. Please make sure to eat a good breakfast or lunch and drink fluids before your donation.

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team will begin its quest for the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament championship this evening at the Anderson Center, when the Eagles host St. Mary’s College in first round action. The match begins at 7 p.m. The Eagle men’s soccer team will host York College of Pa. on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in a CAC Tournament semifinal match. Fans are encouraged to come out in strong numbers and cheer the Eagles to important victories!

On Wednesday, November 9,FEMA, DHS and FCC will conduct the first national test of the Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test. This nationwide test will kick off at 2 p.m. EST and run concurrently across all time zones.

This system test is the first of its kind, designed to broadcast a nationwide message to the American public.  In the history of the country, nothing like it has been conducted on such a level.  As you may be aware, there have been tests in the past, but not of this magnitude encompassing all regions of the nation simultaneously.  The three-minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV band stations exceeding the previous messages broadcast which were anywhere from a 30 second to one-minute message.

There is great concern in local police and emergency management circles about undue public anxiety over this test.  The test message on TV might not indicate that it is just a test.  Fear is that the lack of an explanation regarding the message might create panic.  Please share this information with your family and friends so they are aware of the test.
