The University of Mary Washington has expanded student access to mental health services 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the addition of TimelyCare, an on-demand telehealth platform. The virtual platform, available to students via a website or an app, offers on-demand options to students beyond the in-person hours of the Talley Center for Counseling Services.
Faculty and staff are often the first line of support for students who can benefit from care. If you are a UMW faculty or staff member and need additional support for students, call 833-4-TIMELY (press 2) any time, day or night.
To keep the conversation going with students, you can start with “It sounds like you’re having a really tough time. Did you know UMW now provides counseling services both in person and virtually? Talley Center provides in-person individual and group counseling, and TimelyCare is available 24/7. We could call their number together to get you support.”
Use this service when students shows academic signs of distress or physical and psychological signs of distress; refers to self-harm; discloses problems with family, peers, a significant other or a recent personal loss; isolates from peers, faculty or staff; or is identified by peers as potentially needing support. When Do Meal Plans Start? All meal plans go active at 5pm on Saturday, August 26th. As of that time, all students will need to present their EagleOne ID cards to a dining cashier if they want to use their meal plan or EagleOne account to pay for their meal.
How Do Early Arrival Students Get Meals? Prior to the activation of meal plans, new students and other approved “early arrival” students will have meals covered by the sponsoring University department. All meals will be served at the Top of the CRUC. New students will get guidance from their Orientation Leaders about how and when to dine. Coaches, department and group leaders will give dining guidance to their early arrival students.
Are Meals Available to Faculty & Staff or Others Prior to August 26th? Yes, the Top of the CRUC is open to everyone during our published serving times. Payment will need to be made with credit cards or EagleOne.
What Happens if My Meal Plan Card Doesn’t Work? Don’t worry! Our dining cashier will write down your card number and you’ll be allowed to come in and eat. You may then contact the Office of Student Accounts (540- 654-1250 or UMWBills@umw.edu) or the Assistant Dean of Students Chris Porter (540-654-1659 or cjporter@umw.edu) for assistance in getting your card properly activated.
How Can I Get Help with Food Allergy or Dietary Restriction Questions? Contact our Dining Concierge, Rose Benedict at 540-654-2169; e-mail her at rbenedic@umw.edu; visit the Dining Welcome Center (see left side bar); or stop by the Dining Concierge desk weekdays from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on the 2nd floor of the CRUC. You can also speak with any one of our chefs or managers when you are in the Restaurants at the Top of the CRUC.
Just Ask! Everyone on our team will be glad to assist you, and they’ll be wearing red “Just Ask” buttons to help you identify them as members of our Dining Team. If you have questions or need help, don’t be shy! Just Ask!

Updated: August 11
Campus Walk has now reopened from the north end to James Farmer Hall. The detour at GW Hall will remain in place for a couple more weeks as steam pipe work is completed in this area.
GW Hall and Randolph and Mason Halls remain accessible from Double Drive. Please use the south entrance of GW Hall. Please follow the detour on the sidewalk at Randolph and Mason Halls as Campus Walk is restored in this area.
The sections of Campus Walk where waterline work took place are refilled and topped with compact stone dust until the brick pavers can be replaced. These sections are open, but may have temporary closures as the masonry work is finished. The pathway between the Cedric Rucker University Center and Virginia Hall is now open as well.
Thank you for your patience and allowing extra time to traverse campus this summer. Should you have any questions, please contact Freda Rosso, Assistant Director for Capital Outlay, at frosso@umw.edu.
From August 2:
Campus Walk is currently closed between the Bell Tower and James Farmer Hall as construction crews connect new waterlines.
GW Hall and Randolph and Mason halls remain accessible from Double Drive. Please use the south entrance of GW Hall. Please follow the detour on the sidewalk at Randolph and Mason halls. James Farmer Hall can be accessed from the east side, via the pathways at the Amphitheatre.
Lee Hall is accessible from the north side of the building, via the Sunken Road entrance or from Cedric Rucker University Center and Virginia Hall pathways.
If you travel across campus from Lee Hall south or need to reach areas of campus from the Bell Tower, please do so via the sidewalk on College Avenue and enter through the Cedric Rucker University Center. The new sidewalk on Ball Circle at the Cedric Rucker University Center remains available, and we recommend using College Avenue to avoid the construction area as we make these critical connections in the waterlines.
Please see a diagram indicating the accessible path via College Avenue and the available detour (closed to thru traffic) at Mason and Randolph Halls. For a full map of accessible pathways on campus, please visit the Maps and Directions webpage.
We anticipate this section of Campus Walk opening again the week of Aug. 7. Thank you for your flexibility and patience.
Should you have any questions, please contact Assistant Director for Capital Outlay Freda Rosso at frosso@umw.edu.

The following message is from the Office of Administration and Finance:
On Friday, July 21, we began a project to replace the HVAC units on the roof of the original section of the Jepson Science Center. The project is expected to take five to six weeks and will include periodic building closures of Jepson Science Center and the adjacent road, crane activity, and a controlled perimeter around the project area. Please see the attached diagram for details of the areas that will be blocked off for the project.
The road adjacent to Jepson Science Center leading behind Simpson Library will remain open to traffic but may have periodic closures as materials are delivered or crane work takes place. Signage and staff will be in place to direct traffic during these periods. Two accessible parking spaces remain available adjacent to Jepson.
Some classes and labs in Jepson Science Center have already made alternative plans during the work period, including working remotely or relocating to the new section of the building, which will maintain air conditioning. If you have activities or meetings scheduled in Jepson Science Center during this work period, or if you have any questions, please contact Director of Maintenance Services Nolan Akau at nakau@umw.edu to make sure the building will be open during that time. To ensure the safety of all involved, the building will be closed to all occupants during critical phases of the project when the crane is lifting materials.
Please allow extra time to traverse this end of campus and be aware of construction closures and detours, and visit https://adminfinance.umw.edu/facilities/campus-construction/ for more information on campus construction. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we replace the HVAC units on Jepson Science Center.

Full copies of UMW’s new academic catalogs for 2023-24 are now available on our catalog website as PDF files that may be downloaded and, if desired, printed. Select print options from the menu at the top of the page for the following choices:
Please note that it will always work best to download first and then send the document to your printer as opposed to printing via the browser. The catalogs will print as 8 ½ x 11 inch documents. The Undergraduate Catalog with cover is 257 pages and the Graduate Catalog with cover is 77 pages. You may also separately print any of the individual pages on the website (downloading the page(s) first will produce better printing results).
The catalog can also be accessed through the Provost’s website (Under Resources). Archived catalogs are available through CollegeSource.

The 2023 Holiday Calendar has been updated. This year’s winter break was originally scheduled to start on Monday, Dec. 25, and end on Monday, Jan. 8; it will now begin on Friday, December 22 and end on Friday, January 5. The break starts a bit later than in the past several years due to the way the academic calendar falls in 2023.
PLEASE NOTE: This calendar is based on the current 2023 state-allocated holidays and the UMW academic calendar; if there are changes to either of these, the 2023 UMW holiday schedule may need to be amended.
Enjoy your day!
