Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure that the President’s Office announces that Kelly Eury will be the new Executive Office Manager and Deputy Clerk of the Board of Visitors.

Messplay Announces Retirement as VPAF/CFO
Dear Colleagues,
Paul Messplay, UMW’s Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, has announced his retirement effective January 20, 2023. Paul came to the University of Mary Washington in 2007 to lead the University’s budgeting, and has been VPAF/CFO for the last four years. I am deeply grateful for Paul’s service, his professionalism, and his role in ensuring that UMW’s financial position is stable and our facilities are maintained and improved. We will miss him greatly, but know that he will enjoy retirement.
I want the UMW community to know that I am launching a national search for the next individual to fill this significant leadership role. The Vice President for Administration and Finance and CFO is a key member of the president’s cabinet who is charged with overseeing critical functions that are essential to the University’s ongoing success. The VPAF/CFO advises the President, other cabinet members and the BOV (through the President) on financial affairs, supervises and coordinates the preparation of the University program budget for submission to the State Department of Planning and Budget and the preparation of the University’s capital outlay budget submissions. This position also oversees administration and management of six areas: Budget and Financial Analysis, Business Services, Procurement, Finance, Facilities Services, Human Resources. Chief of Staff Dr. Jeffrey McClurken will be chairing this search committee which will be working with the search firm of Academic Search, Inc. with the goal of having someone in place by January 2023.
I want to end by thanking Paul Messplay for his distinguished service to the University of Mary Washington, and we will all have a chance to do so both informally and formally before he leaves in January.
Best regards,
Troy
Troy D. Paino, J.D., Ph.D.
President
Information on COVID-19 for the Fall 2022 Semester
Dear UMW community,
In preparation for the upcoming academic year, we would like to inform you of the most current information regarding COVID-19 for the fall 2022 semester. UMW will continue to evaluate the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with public health guidance and provide recommendations to staff and students. In order to continue to provide a safe, engaging community, all members of the community must assess their environment and risk tolerance, exercise common sense practices, and be sensitive to the needs of fellow students, staff, and faculty. Here are some highlights:
Vaccinations
UMW continues to strongly encourage students and employees to get stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations/boosters. We strongly encourage students to upload their vaccination card to the Student Health Portal. Awareness of your status allows the UMW public health team to provide the best and proper ongoing advice for our Quarantine and Isolation practices.
Masking
Besides vaccines, the wearing of a well-fitting mask is highly effective at preventing the spread of the coronavirus, including its variants. Masks are no longer required anywhere on UMW property, except healthcare settings (Student Health Center, Talley Center for Counseling Services, Athletic Training room). Masks are recommended when in close proximity of others for a prolonged period of time, particularly indoors. We especially recommend KN95 masks (available on campus at the UC or by work order request to employee departments), double masking, or equivalent masks.
Testing
Everyone who has COVID symptoms, regardless of their vaccination status, should stay away from others and get tested. Students can contact the Student Health Center, while employees should consult their health care provider or get tested at a local pharmacy.
There will be no proctored COVID testing on campus this semester for members of the UMW community who believe they might have been exposed. However, COVID-19 self-tests will be available for pick-up at the Student Health Center, Eagle Landing front desk, Human Resources, the Athletic Training room, or Marye House front desk.
Continued Flexibility
As we’ve all learned since March of 2020, COVID-19 is a moving target. Thus, members of the UMW community need to be flexible and adjust as conditions and directives change. The Public Health Advisory Working Group and the Cabinet will keep a close eye on local COVID conditions and, as necessary, we will take additional temporary steps to further protect the UMW community.
For the latest updates and more information, visit the Fall 2022 website.
Thank you for your continuing to support UMW’s health and safety efforts.
Sincerely,
Brandy Ellard, Director of Emergency Management and Safety & Chair of Public Health Advisory Working GroupDave Fleming, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Residence Life and Housing
Betsy Chinn Retirement Celebration, August 3

Betsy Chinn

The Office of the President invites you to a reception honoring Betsy Chinn, Office Manager and Deputy Clerk of the Board of Visitors, on Wednesday, Aug. 3, in George Washington Hall, Room 103, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Over the past several decades, Betsy made tremendous accomplishments throughout her career and left lasting, positive impressions on those around her. Those who know Betsy, know she is especially kind, caring, funny, hard-working and a true professional. Starting as a clerk typist in the Registrar’s Office in 1973, her career led her to work in many departments on campus, some of which included student records, development and management information systems, bookstore, disbursing office, business and finance, and finally, the Office of the President. We will greatly miss her in the Office of the President and in Board of Visitors meetings, where she has seen presidents, administrators and many, many board members come and go over the years.
