Larry Lehman, professor of mathematics, presented a paper entitled “Suborders of Quadratic Polynomials Modulo Primes” at the fall meeting of the MD-DC-VA Section of the Mathematical Association of America, held at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., in October 2012.
Janusz Konieczny and Former Students Publish in Algebra Colloquium
Janusz Konieczny, professor of mathematics, has co-authored a research article, Sn-normal semigroups of partial transformations, published in the journal Algebra Colloquium. The article has been written jointly with two UMW graduates, Sean Droms and Roberto Palomba, and contains the results of undergraduate research that Sean and Roberto did when they were mathematics students at the University of Mary Washington.
Keith Mellinger Publishes Research Article
Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics Keith Mellinger recently had his article “The de Bruijn–Erdős theorem for hypergraphs” published in the journal Designs, Codes and Cryptography. The article was co-authored with mathematicians from the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of California in San Diego, and Tel Aviv University, Israel.
Keith Mellinger Publishes Research Article
Keith E. Mellinger, associate professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics, co-authored the article “Generalized Pellegrino caps ” which appears in the most recent issue of the journal Finite Fields and Their Applications. The journal publishes papers in various applications of finite fields including algebraic coding theory, cryptology, combinatorial design theory, pseudorandom number generation and linear recurring sequences.
Leo Lee Presents in California
In early August, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jangwoon “Leo” Lee presented “The h-p Version of Stochastic Galerkin FEM for Stochastic Optimal Control Problems” at the US-Korea Conference 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Debra Hydorn Publishes Lesson Plans
As an associate editor for the website Statistics on the Web, Professor of Mathematics Debra Hydorn recently published two lesson plans. Titled “The Taste of Yellow” and “How Long is 30 Seconds?” these lesson plans serve as exemplars that follow the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education from the American Statistical Association and also meet standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Common Core for State Standards for Mathematics Practice.
Suzanne Sumner Delivers Invited Talk at VCU
Professor of Mathematics Suzanne Sumner, together with Dr. Wyatt Mangum, adjunct faculty member, recently delivered the invited talk “Worker Bee Aggression towards a Foreign Queen: Modeling from Data” for the Progress on Difference Equations international conference hosted at Virginia Commonwealth University. The talk addressed their continued research into the mathematical modeling associated with the behavior of bees.
Randall Helmstutler Publishes in PRIMUS
Associate Professor of Mathematics Randall Helmstutler recently co-authored an article published in the journal PRIMUS – Problems, Resources, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies. The article, “Finite Topological Spaces as a Pedagogical Tool,” looks at the use of finite topological spaces as examples in a point-set topology class especially suited to help students transition into abstract mathematics.
