The sophomore from Henrico, Virginia, allowed one earned run or less in six of her first seven starts of the month, striking out 14 batters in a win over Grove City College, and adding 10 strikeouts against Bridgewater College and nationally ranked Eastern Mennonite University.

Deppe struck out six and allowed just two hits in UMW’s 5-1 win over Salisbury on March 25. The Eagles gained head coach Dee Conway’s 500 career win over spring break in Myrtle Beach as well.

Faculty Liaison’s Name:  Parrish Waters

Sport:  Field Hockey

Years at UMW: 2

Position/Title: Assistant Professor of Biology

What was your favorite sport growing up? Briefly describe your favorite memory playing or watching it.

Soccer – I never really liked watching it growing up… playing soccer gave me the opportunity to do the one thing I was somewhat skilled at – simply running fast.

Where is your favorite place around town to get a bite to eat? Foode – though I visit much less than desired, as I almost have to put my meals on layaway.

If you could pick one superpower to have, what would it be and why? Time Travel… with that power, all is possible. Right?

Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why?

The first field hockey game I ever watched was this year, during my tenure as faculty liaison. I learned quite a bit – as I say with a colleague who was herself an alum of UMW field hockey – so I cannot say the field hockey is or was my favorite.  That said, I enjoyed what I could catch in that game.  I would have to say the closest sport to field hockey I’ve ever watched was polo, which I think I understood even less.

If you were a Head Coach and could pick three words to motivate your team and hang in their locker room, which words would you choose? You Matter – Period

What does a great leader look like to you? A follower.

What is a must read for UMW Student-Athletes? On the Move by Oliver Sacks.

What is the best advice you have ever heard given to a college graduate? “In the real world, there are plenty of people who think very differently than you do, and they hold their opinions just as passionately. So if you want to change their minds, if you want to work with them to move this country forward, you can’t just shut them out. You have to persuade them, and you have to compromise with them. That is what so many of our heroes of history have done.” — Michelle Obama

Finally, if you were hanging out on Ball Circle picking the brains of four professional/famous athletes (living or deceased), who would they be? Mohammed Ali, OJ Simpson, Tiki Barber and Gerald Ford

Faculty Liaison Stephen Davies

Stephen Davies

Faculty Liaison’s Name:  Stephen Davies

Sport:  Women’s Basketball

Years at UMW: 10!

Position/Title: Associate Professor of Computer Science

What was your favorite sport growing up? Briefly describe your favorite memory playing or watching it.

I actually played some basketball myself, since I was fairly tall. I really really sucked at anything involving handling the ball, though – I got super nervous as soon as I had it in my hands, and my turnover percentage was near 100%. My teammates very quickly learned never to pass the ball to me under any circumstances. I was good at defense, though, since I worked hard at it and seemed to care more about it than most other players.

True story: In the practice before the CAC Championship a couple years ago, Coach Applebury had me play some defense against Breezi Comden, Taylor Barton and the other post players. I naively thought I might get a block or two, or at least get a couple of people to change their shots. Instead, they scored 17 times out of 17. I have it on tape somewhere!

Where is your favorite place around town to get a bite to eat? Gotta say I love Miso!

If you could pick one superpower to have, what would it be and why? Invisibility, so I could sneak in and spy on Marymount’s game plans before the big game.

Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why?

Any women’s sport. Growing up, like most Americans I was brainwashed somehow into thinking that it was cool to root for men’s sports and lame to root for women’s. The thought process (such as it was) went like this: if the men’s team in any sport played against the women’s team head-to-head, the men’s team would of course win. Therefore (?) one should follow men’s teams, because they were better.

I changed my mind about all of this when I came to UMW and started following Lady Eagles hoops. Now if you want macho, one-on-one athleticism and power dunks, by all means watch the NBA. But the grace, heart, discipline, teamwork, coordination and utterly selfless play of the women’s game takes your breath away. Women have different physical strengths than men, and so the game revolves around different things. To me, it turns out to be more complex and interesting. It is an absolutely beautiful game to watch.

Since then, I’ve noticed this about nearly all women’s sports. Watching Team USA win the World Cup was a blast, as was the gymnastics in the latest Olympics. Ditto softball, volleyball, you name it. It’s the pride and enthusiasm that you see on almost every player’s face: a pure love of the game. It’s dedication to the fundamentals, and a deep study of the strategy, perhaps to compensate for less explosive physical gifts than men. It’s a fierce devotion to their teammates, with almost zero ego. And the depths of emotion – both the highs and lows – are so poignant they’ll make you cry. Those who write off women’s sports are missing more than they’ll ever know.

If you were a Head Coach and could pick three words to motivate your team and hang in their locker room, which words would you choose? Pride. Discipline. Team.

What does a great leader look like to you? A combination of Coach Applebury and point guard Megan Green. Someone with an inspiring vision that others can understand and latch onto; someone with a heart and passion that’s uncontainable; and someone who deeply and genuinely cares about the people they lead becoming their very best. A great leader doesn’t make it about herself; she makes it about those she leads.

What is a must read for UMW Student-Athletes? The Bible.

What is the best advice you have ever heard given to a college graduate? Figure out who you were meant to be, and be that person. Odds are, this will include things that don’t necessarily impress your friends. But don’t waste years of your life trying to be someone you think others want you to be. Even if you succeed, it won’t be worth it.

Finally, if you were hanging out on Ball Circle picking the brains of four professional/famous athletes (living or deceased), who would they be? Terrell Davis, Carli Lloyd, Tony LaRussa, Mia Hamm.

Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why? Triathlon because it is demanding, complex, and rewards consistent hard work.

Student-Athletes Give Back Ten for Ten

The popular NCAA commercial that states, “There are over 400,000 NCAA student-athletes and just about all of us will be going pro in something other than sports,” is a snapshot of the uplifting yet bittersweet truth. Most student-athletes at Mary Washington have just four years to compete for NCAA Championships before the biggest game day on their schedule: graduation. And while those four years often seem to come and go in a blink of an eye, the student-athlete experience instills character traits and values which last a lifetime.

It is for that very reason Mary Washington student-athletes took on the Ten for Ten Challenge this fall, a peer-led effort to secure donations of $10 from UMW’s student-athletes, in hopes of teams achieving 100 percent participation by Oct. 10The goal of the new initiative was to educate current Eagles on the power of philanthropic giving, honor the many transformative Eagle Club gifts in recent years, and build on a foundation of generosity so that future Eagles will also have a life-changing experience at Mary Washington.

As one of the first student-athletes to go Ten for Ten, junior basketball player Kendall Parker stated, “[Eagle Club] donations, small or large, make a great impact on every student-athlete’s life whether they realize it or not. It is important that my teammates donate as well because if it weren’t for the Eagle Club [members], we would not have all of the resources that we use on a daily basis. Donations play a huge role in our process of winning a CAC Championship and beyond.”

Parker’s call to her peers was heard and, for the first time ever, more than half of the student-athlete population – 277 to be exact – made gifts to support their programs. Eleven teams had 100 percent Ten for Ten giving participation, and 20 out of 22 varsity sport programs participated in all. In addition, two of the four team sport programs also participated.

“I’m really proud of our student-athletes for rising up and showing tremendous leadership with the Ten for Ten Challenge,” said Ken Tyler, Director of Athletics. “They have demonstrated their commitment to UMW Athletics and have helped sustain a legacy of excellence. Now, I’m excited to watch our alumni, families, and friends help the Eagles soar even higher!”

UMW’s student-athletes are now challenging alumni and friends to follow their lead!

Make your gift to the Eagle Club today.
