Stephen P. Hanna, professor of geography, and Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, are co-authors of a research article, “Visualizing Virginia’s Changing Electorate: Mapping Presidential Elections from 2000 to 2012,” which was published in the May 2013 issue of The Virginia News Letter. The Virginia News Letter is published by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.
Stephen Farnsworth Presented Research at Conference
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently presented a co-authored research paper, “Election News Coverage across the Atlantic: 2008 US Presidential Election Campaigns on German, UK and US Television,” at the Annual Meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association in Chicago. The paper is part of a chapter in Dr. Farnsworth’s latest co-authored book, “The Global President? International News and the U.S. Government,” which will be published by Rowman & Littlefield later this year.

Study Created by Stephen Farnsworth Garners Media Attention
A new Virginia public opinion survey sponsored by UMW’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies and created by Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science, has generated considerable media attention, with two front-page news stories on the poll in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and reports in a variety of media outlets, including Slate.com, the Daily Kos, the American Prospect and the Washington Post.
Stephen Farnsworth Lectures on Journalism & Foreign Policy
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently delivered a lecture entitled “Journalism and U.S. Foreign Policy” in Washington, D.C., as part of the U.S. State Department’s Institute for International Education Visitor Leadership Program for North Africa and the Middle East.
In addition, Farnsworth has been interviewed recently by several news outlets for stories relating to the Virginia legislative session, including the Washington Post, the Washington Times, the Washington Examiner and WAMU-FM, Washington’s national public radio station.
Stephen Farnsworth Gives Insight to International Audiences
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, spoke recently about the prospects for President Obama’s second term as part of the “2013 American Leadership Program: Inaugural Visions,” a nation-wide cable program broadcast from George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The program aired on public and educational television channels around the country.
In addition, Farnsworth has been interviewed recently by several news outlets for stories relating to Obama’s State of the Union speech and his second term, including Businessweek, CTV Television News of Canada, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Inside Higher Education, NewsChannel 8 DC, and area radio stations WFVA and WFLS.
Stephen Farnsworth Named President-Elect of Pi Sigma Alpha
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, has been named President-Elect of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. Nine UMW students have won national writing awards from the 600-chapter honor society, more than any other university in the nation. More than half of those UMW students were recognized for papers written in Farnsworth’s Research and Writing class or for honors projects that he directed. Farnsworth has served for eight years as a member of the honor society’s national executive council.
Stephen Farnsworth Co-Authors Book Chapter
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, is co-author of a book chapter, “Mass Media and Policymaking,” published in the Routledge Handbook of Public Policy. The chapter grew out of a research project that originated during Farnsworth’s time as a Canada-US Fulbright Scholar at McGill University in Montreal.

Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, delivered a co-authored research paper, “An Extended Presidential Honeymoon? Coverage of Barack Obama in The New York Times During 2009 and 2010,” at this year’s meeting of the Northeastern Political Science Association in Boston.
Stephen Farnsworth Publishes Journal Article
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the university’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, is coauthor of a refereed journal article entitled, “Event-Driven Environmental News in the US and Canada,” published in the current issue of Electronic Media and Politics. The article grew out of a research project that originated during Dr. Farnsworth’s time as a Canada-US Fulbright Scholar at McGill University in Montreal.
