Professor of History and American Studies Krystyn Moon recently co-authored two articles on central Cuba.
Krystyn Moon, Professor of History and American Studies, recently co-authored two articles on central Cuba. “La Picadora: A Case Study in Cuban Agroecotourism,” which appeared last summer in the International Journal of Cuban Studies, looks at the impact of sustainable farming and tourism on a rural community that historically had not seen foreign visitors. “Food Access, Identity, and Taste in Two Rural Cuban Communities” interrogates Bourdieu’s notions of class identity by exploring food preferences among fishers and farmers in Sancti Spíritus Province. This essay was recently published in Gastronomica.
Moon’s research began through an educational exchange sponsored by COPLAC in 2015.

Safe Zone is excited to announce several upcoming events.
We will be hosting our spring book club on Wednesday, February 23 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. We will be reading Angela Chen’s ACE: What Asexuality Reveals about Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex. This program is open to all faculty and staff, including adjunct faculty and part-time staff. Books will be provided for free to the first 15 participants who register. Registration is required and space is limited.
We will be offering our next Faculty/Staff Basic Workshop on Thursday, February 24 from 3:00-5:30 on-campus. This workshop is open to all faculty and staff, including adjunct faculty and part-time staff. In this workshop, we cover everything from basic terminology to how to be an ally. The overall aim of the workshop is to help make UMW a more LGBTQ+ inclusive community. At the end of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to sign our ally form and get a rainbow eagle ally sticker. Registration is required and space is limited.
We will be tabling for Transgender Day of Visibility on Thursday, March 31 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Weather permitting we will be on the UC patio. Otherwise, you can find us in the lobby of the UC. Please come out and write a message of support. We’ll be handing out resources and swag. All are welcome to stop by the table!
If you have any questions about Safe Zone or would like to register for the workshop and/or book club, then please email Laura Wilson at lwilson5@umw.edu.

Eric Lorentzen, Professor of English
Eric G. Lorentzen, Professor of English, published a review of Adam Grener’s new book, Improbability, Chance, and the Nineteenth-Century Realist Novel, in the latest volume of the Victorians Institute Journal (48). Grener’s novelists (Austen, Scott, Dickens, Trollope, Hardy) were committed to a mode of fiction that primarily foregrounded chance and coincidence to “represent a historical and contingent world,” rather than creating a convincing tale of ordinary and conventional probability.

For more than three years, various departments at UMW – Finance, Human Resources, Student Employment, Enterprise Application Services (IT) and Payroll – have been working alongside the Virginia Department of Accounts (DOA) and the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) to implement the statewide Cardinal Human Capital Management system (Cardinal HCM). Cardinal HCM will replace several of the Commonwealth’s aging systems, including the Personnel Management Information System (PMIS), the Benefits Eligibility System (BES), the Commonwealth Integrated Personnel/Payroll System (CIPPS), Employee Direct and Payline. UMW is part of Cardinal HCM’s release 2 and is scheduled to go-live in April 2022.
At UMW, most employees will use only Cardinal’s Employee Self-Service (ESS) module. ESS replaces Payline and Employee Direct. ESS can be used to view information unique to you, view your pay stub or W-2, or to enroll in or update your health benefits. You will use an email address to log into ESS. This can be your UMW email address or an optional personal email address. Communications regarding health benefits will be sent to the email address you choose.
If you prefer to use a personal email address, follow the steps below to enter a Cardinal Optional HCM Pay and Benefits email address directly into Banner SSB. If you prefer to use your UMW email, you do not need to take any action.
MyTime will continue to be UMW’s system of record for time, attendance and leave balances. The way you currently use MyTime will not change.
DOA, DHRM and UMW’s Cardinal HCM Project Team will continue to share information via email regarding the implementation of Cardinal HCM and its impact on UMW employees.
