UMW Galleries Exhibition Opens Thursday, Oct. 28

Don’t miss the opening reception of the UMW Galleries exhibition “Computer Pictures: The Contemporary Language of Digital Media” from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 28 in both the Ridderhof Martin and duPont galleries.

Artist Semi Ryu will give a live performance of “Parting on Z, Fredericksburg,” from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in Ridderhof Martin Gallery.  The performance focuses on the real-time emotional and physical interactions between a virtual puppet and its puppeteer.

At noon on Friday,  a panel discussion featuring some of the exhibition artists will be held in duPont Gallery.  Read the news release.

Anne Timpano Exhibits at FSU Museum

Anne Timpano’s linocut print, Venus as Paper Doll, was recently exhibited in the juried exhibition, 25th Tallahassee International, at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee, Florida.

It was one of 58 works selected from nearly 800 entries.  The print and an accompanying artist’s statement were published in the exhibition’s full color catalog..

Anthropology professor Eric Gable’s book Anthropology and Egalitarianism was published recently by Indiana University Press (IUP). Below is a description that appears on the IUP website:
Anthropology and Egalitarianism is an artful and accessible introduction to key themes in cultural anthropology. Writing in a deeply personal style and using material from his fieldwork in three dramatically different locales—Indonesia, West Africa, and Monticello, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson—Eric Gable shows why the ethnographic encounter is the core of the discipline’s method and the basis of its unique contribution to understanding the human condition. UMW Master Plan Comments Welcome

As many of you are aware, a year ago, the University contracted with a firm to develop a new Master Site Plan for the Fredericksburg and Stafford campuses.  The last Master Plan was done in 2002 so it was time to take a fresh look.

After conducting many focus groups and doing extensive research on student needs and trends, infrastructure and facility conditions, space needs and demand, and changes in the University’s organizational structure, a draft Plan has been proposed.  In a continuing effort to engage the University’s constituencies, public forums have been held and a website has been established in which you can see the plan highlights, view drawings and post comments.

Everyone is encouraged to provide feedback to the plan and/or process.  Your input is important to the success of the new plan.  If you missed the forums, you are encouraged to visit the Master Plan website at http://masterplan.umwblogs.org/ to review the draft and submit your comments.  Thank you very much.

Pumpkin Palooza, Oct. 31

UMW’s Community Outreach and Resources (COAR) invites children in the community to the annual Pumpkin Palooza from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday Oct. 31 in the Great Hall at Woodard Campus Center.  Costumed COAR volunteers will escort children door-to-door in decorated residence halls for “trick-or-treating.” Then, the children will return to the Great Hall for Halloween-themed games and activities.

The event is free of charge and open to all children in the area. Children are encouraged to dress in costumes. All must be accompanied by an adult.

Andrew Dolby and Deborah O’Dell

Associate Professors of Biology Andrew Dolby and Deborah O’Dell were awarded a $1,000 grant by the Virginia Society of Ornithology for their joint project Enzyme immunoassay quantification of Heat Shock Protein 60 and its application to avian conservation biology.

At the Virginia Academy of Science’s Fall Undergraduate Research Meeting, held at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond in October, O’Dell’s student, Anum Shaikh, was awarded funding for undergraduate research. Anum will study the “Effects of Combined Vitamin E and C Treatment on Plaque Formation in Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Meditation Space Opens Oct. 15

The James Farmer Multicultural Center announces the official opening of the Meditation Space on Friday, October 15, at noon.  The Meditation Space is located in the Hamlet House using the entrance facing the Fairfax House.  The Meditation Space was designed to provide a supportive and spiritually nourishing environment for students from all backgrounds and cultures to pray, reflect, and relax.  Having a quiet space dedicated to individual self-knowledge and renewal will enhance the campus experience for many students.

There also will be an Open House for the Meditation Space on Wednesday, October 20, from  10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  The Open House is an opportunity for campus members to visit and tour the Meditation Space, as well as get more information regarding the facility and its services.

Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar at UMW, Oct. 18-19

Herbert Gintis, Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, will be at UMW on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 18-19.  Gintis is external professor at the Santa Fe Institute and professor of economics at Central European University (Budapest) where he heads a multidisciplinary research project, “The Social and Mental Dynamics of Cooperation.”  He was professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts from 1976 to 2002.  In addition, he is the author of Game Theory Evolving and The Bounds of Reason; and a coauthor of Schooling in Capitalist America, Foundations of Human Sociality, Moral Sentiments and Material Interests and, forthcoming, A Cooperative Species.  He is an editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and of Games.

Dig Pink® is the Side-Out Foundation’s trademark name for its fundraising events. All proceeds benefit Side-Out, which in turn awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families. Your participation gives the volleyball community the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of all breast cancer patients. Thank you for getting involved!
