UMW Organizational Updates
With approval from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), organizational updates within UMW colleges include:
- A School of Science and a School of the Arts within the College of Arts and Sciences have been established.
- Within the College of Arts and Sciences, the departments of Anthropology, Art History, Classics, and Philosophy and Religion have merged into a newly named Department of Cultural and Philosophical Inquiry.
- Computer Science, Economics, and Mathematics departments have moved to the College of Business. That College now houses four departments: Accounting, Finance and Economics; Computer Science; Management and Marketing; and Mathematics.
- Athletics, Health and Physical Education, and Nursing departments have moved to the College of Education. That College now includes three departments: Athletics, Health, and Physical Education; Education; and Nursing. It is expected to be a space for future program growth in human development. For example, faculty worked this summer to develop a proposed master’s program in Counseling, and a Master of Science in Nursing has been submitted to SCHEV for review.
Looking ahead, organizational efforts and conversations are expected to continue, including efforts to organize the Humanities and Social Sciences, the creation of a Center for Humanities, and to consider names for colleges and departments. To learn more, see the full organizational chart.

UMW Student Freddy Rogers Named Div. III Regional Student-Athlete of the Year
University of Mary Washington men’s soccer goalkeeper Freddy Rogers has been named as the Division III Commissioners 2024-25 Regional Male Student-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the organization.
The D3CA Student-Athlete of the Year Award recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated excellence in athletics, academics, leadership, and service throughout their collegiate careers. Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, serves as the presenting sponsor of these awards.
Rogers, a United Soccer Coaches first team All-America selection as the goalie for the nationally-ranked and Coast-to-Coast Conference champion men’s soccer team, also gained consensus first team Academic All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches as well as the College Sports Communicators. Too, he was named the UMW Athletics Student-Athlete of the Year last year.
Rogers, who will graduate in December, carries a 3.9 grade-point-average as a marketing major, was just the 13th student-athlete in the athletic department’s history to be named to a CoSIDA/CSC All-American team and the first since 2016.
The 2024 season was a success to say the least for Rogers and the Eagles, who were ranked the No. 1 team in the nation for the majority of the year. Rogers recorded a 19-2-2 record in net — which is tied for the second most wins in a single season in program history — as well as a 19-1-2 record against NCAA Div. III opponents.
Rogers started all 23 games in net for UMW, playing in over 2,000 minutes this season. He recorded 63 saves and nine shutouts, while being named the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Defensive Player of the Year.
New Name Badges for the New School Year, Ordering Sept. 5
With the start of a new academic year, we want to refresh our employee name badges. The new style will be similar to our prior oval name badge, with durable etched lettering and magnetic attachment. Even if you recently ordered or reordered a name badge, you can receive a new one this fall, as this style will ensure clear, consistent, and readable text for employee names.
You do not need to submit a request to receive a new name badge. Everyone will receive a complimentary new name badge as a part of our employee appreciation this semester. Your badge will feature the name currently listed in Banner. You can check how your name is listed In Banner Self Service.
Only those who wish to use a preferred name should indicate it by completing the order details via the online form by Sept 5.
New name badges will be delivered via campus mail or during the Employee Appreciation events around Fall Break. Please wear your name badge for major University Admissions events and Open Houses, so our students and families can quickly identify you as someone who can answer questions and share the great work here at UMW.
