The following notice is from University Police:

The alleged perpetrator of three recent campus break-ins has been apprehended and arrested.

Late last night, a student observed a break-in occurring in Pollard Hall. The student immediately called University Police. Based on the description provided, an alert was sent out to all area jurisdictions. The City of Fredericksburg Police located the suspect and detained him until University Police arrived to identify and arrest him. Subsequently, based on information obtained during the arrest, University Police and State Police executed a search warrant on the suspect’s residence in the City of Fredericksburg.

The accused, Evan Williams, is not a student. University Police charged him with one count of breaking and entering. Upon further investigation, evidence indicated that the same individual was involved in previous recent break-ins at duPont and Virginia halls. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Key to resolution of these crimes was the quick and decisive action by a student in providing information.

As a reminder to the University community, the Police Communications Center at Brent House is staffed around the clock. Anyone observing suspicious activity or unsafe conditions should call University Police immediately at 540/654-1025; alternately, dial 4444 from any University phone or go to any exterior blue light station and press the call button. Additionally, anonymous tips or information may be reported to University Police via the Silent Witness web link. Also, for the safety of students, the Police Communications Center provides after-hour safety escorts.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the deaths of two beloved members of the UMW Community:

Bernie Lemoine, professor emeritus of music, died on Saturday, January 19 at the age of 83. Having served in the Korean conflict, he joined the music faculty of Mary Washington in 1965 after receiving his bachelor and master of music degrees in piano performance from Oberlin and from the University of Illinois. He later received his Ph.D. in music theory from Catholic University where, according to Professor Martha Fickett, his research centered on the late piano music of Franz Liszt. At Mary Washington he taught piano, music theory, and music appreciation until his retirement in 2001. Professor Fickett recalls his expert performances on campus in solo recitals, as an accompanist, and with the College Community Orchestra, now the Philharmonic. His wife Suzanne predeceased him and he is survived by his daughter Lisa and his son Michael. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Jefferson Davis Highway, where a funeral will also be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25. George Van Sant, distinguished professor emeritus of philosophy, died Sunday, January 20 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond at the age of 85. He joined the Mary Washington faculty in 1958 after receiving his A.B. from St. John’s College in Annapolis, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.  He taught at Mary Washington for 32 years before his retirement in 1990, serving as chair of his department. He was the recipient of the 1986 Grellet C. Simpson Award for Undergraduate Teaching, the university’s highest honor bestowed on a faculty member. His support of students continued beyond retirement through scholarships that he and his wife, Milena, provided.  Active in local and state government, he was a three-term member of the Fredericksburg City Council, head of the Fredericksburg Democratic Party and recipient the Prince B. Woodard Citizenship Award, the highest honor given to an individual by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. A proud member of the Marine Corps during both World War II and the Korean conflict, George revisited his experiences in his 2008 book “Taking on the Burden of History.” In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Duncan. His son Ned predeceased him. Early this morning, Thursday, January 17, University Housekeeping discovered a break-in of several faculty offices on the third floor in DuPont Hall Currently, the incident is under investigation by University Police and the Virginia State Police. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Sergeant Brad Sullivan with University Police at (540) 654-1025.

The following message is from the UMW Police: 

This morning, Thursday, January 17, the University Police Department was contacted by a student who noticed an object in the Marshall parking lot that appeared to be a weapon. After investigation, the police officer recovered what appeared to be a 38- or 357-caliber revolver. Upon further examination, the officer found that the revolver was replica that cannot be fired. The owner of this revolver or anyone with information should contact the Sergeant Brad Sullivan with University Police at (540) 654-1025.

Availability Notice To All Employees: 

All University of Mary Washington employees including Wage and Adjunct are eligible to enroll in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and/or the 403(b) Tax Deferred Savings Plan. All contributions are pre-tax deductions.  

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has increased the deferral contribution limit for employees who participate in 457/403(b) from $17,000 to $17,500 for calendar year 2013. The catch-up contribution limit for those age 50 and over remains unchanged at $5,500. Also no changes to the Cash Match Plan; the agency cash match continues to be 50% of your contribution to one of the Plans, not to exceed $20 per pay date.  Wage and Adjunct employees are not eligible to receive the cash match.  

Full time salaried employees hired on or after January 1, 2008 are enrolled automatically in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan for a pre-tax deduction of $20.00 and $10.00 to the cash match plan unless they have an existing 457 account or opted out of enrolling in the plan.   There are no automatic enrollments for the 403(b) Tax Deferred Savings Plan.  

To enroll or change your current pay period deductions: 

457 Deferred Compensation plan:

 • Online: Go to  https://vadcp.ingplans.com/eportal/welcome.do  (You will need your password)

• By phone: 1-VRS-DC-PLAN1(1-877-327-5261), option 1.

• Paper enrollment form only if you are unable to enroll using the above options. 

403(b) Tax Deferred Savings Plan:

• Select and contact a vendor from the attached approved provider list.
• Complete the Salary Reduction Agreement form (SRA).  SRA Form  For initial enrollment, the SRA should be completed by you and the Financial Advisor/Agent of the selected Provider and returned to Office of Human Resources for processing.
• To receive the Cash Match on the 403(b) account, complete the Cash Match Agreement Form and forward to the Office of Human Resources for processing.  Cash Match Form    

Beneficiaries:

Are your beneficiaries up to date?  Your beneficiary form should be updated after each

personal milestone such as a change in marital status, the birth or adoption of a child or as your life events change.

To update/change your beneficiary for your life insurance benefit and VRS Retirement, submit a new Designation of Beneficiary (VRS-2 ) to Office of Human Resources as soon as possible for processing. If you don’t know who you designated, you may also submit a new VRS-2  to Office of Human Resources for processing.    

To update/change your beneficiary for the 457 deferred compensation plan, complete the 457(b)/401(a) beneficiary form and mail to ING.  

To update your beneficiary with the Optional Retirement Plan or 403(b), please contact the Vendor directly.

Influenza (“flu”) activity continues to spread through our community.    

It is important to remember that certain people – including young children, persons aged 65 years or older, and those with underlying lung or heart conditions—are especially vulnerable to developing flu complications.   The good news is that each of us can take precautions to control the spread of flu.
