I am sorry to tell you that Dr. Nicola Nikolić, Professor Emeritus of Physics, died on June 14. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, “Nick” received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Belgrade in 1950, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1955 after studying the History of Art at his undergraduate institution. In 1962 he received his Ph.D. from Columbia.  A member of the Mary Washington College faculty from 1969-2001, he earlier taught at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and at Louisiana State University. From 1972-73 he chaired our Department of Physics and Astronomy. He served as Secretary of the Faculty during 1992-93.

Nick had a wide range of interests. Scores of Mary Washington students passed through his Astronomy course and his upper-level Physics courses. An accomplished photographer, his work was seen throughout central Virginia, including two exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He and his wife Jean, who survives him, were founding members of the Holy Cross Anglican Church. He was a member of the Board of Regents of the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library from 1998-2000.

Students and colleagues warmly remember Nick’s liveliness and enthusiasm. Generations of Physics majors, with whom he had a strong rapport, received individualized attention from him.  Many of those whose work he supervised have already written to express their sorrow at his passing.

Dr. Nikolić ‘s family held visiting hours on Monday, June 18 in Fredericksburg and a funeral service on Tuesday, June 19.

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2012 is the deadline for the CLD Bonus Submissions

Recognition bonuses for certifications, licenses, and degrees (CLDs) are available for administrative faculty, non-probationary classified, and wage employees who have recently received a certification, license, or degree.

To find out if you or your employees qualify and to process the request follow the steps below or visit the website at http://adminfinance.umw.edu/hr/employee-relations/employee-recognition/cld-policy/ .

1. Determine if the certification, degree, or license was earned between the qualifying dates (see chart below) and meets the program guidelines outlined in the policy and in the CLD Checklist  (attached).

Submission Deadline	Qualification Period
July 31, 2012	January 1, 2012-June 30, 2012
January 31, 2013	July 1, 2012-December 31, 2012

2. Complete the Recognition Award Notice Form (attached) and include the required documentation listed below (must be attached for submissions to be considered).

Certifications – Copy of the certification and attached CLD Checklist

Licenses – Copy of the license and attached CLD Checklist

Degrees – Official or unofficial transcripts

3. Obtain the appropriate approvals. Employee’s supervisor and the Cabinet VP for the area will have to approve the request using the attached CLD Checklist and Recognition Award Notice Form.

4. Submit the required documentation:

Bonus issuance is contingent on budget availability.  All approved bonuses will be issued to the employee within 30 days of approval.

Special Enrollment for Medical Flexible Reimbursement Accounts until June 22

As stated below, you may now contribute up to $5,000 to the Medical Flexible Reimbursement Account (MRA) for the plan year of July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.  To enroll, increase or decrease your MRA contribution, please complete the special enrollment form and forward to Office Of Human Resources on or before close of business Friday, June 22, 2012.  EmployeeDirect will not be available for this special enrollment.  

If you take no action your 2012-2013 MRA will remain as you elected during our annual open enrollment.

It is with a heavy heart I let you know that Margaret Meringolo, wife of Torre Meringolo, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 6, due to complications from lung cancer. She was surrounded by her family. An obituary follows with information on arrangements.

Margaret C. Meringolo, 59, of Hollywood, Md., died June 6, 2012, at Georgetown University Hospital following a heroic eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer.   She inspired her family and friends during this period as she maintained an optimistic view of life throughout.  She is survived by her loving husband of 41years, Salvatore (Torre) Meringolo; two daughters, Mariel Meringolo of Ludlow, Vt., and Catherine Meringolo of New York City, N.Y.; a son, Robert Meringolo of Denver, Colo.; parents, Eugene and Evelyn Stadnyk of Hollywood, Md.; and brother, Eugene Stadnyk of Boca Raton, Fla.

A New York native, Margaret graduated from Iona College and began a long pioneering career in computer science that spanned from large main frames to today’s desk top computing.    Her career included stints at Great Northern Paper Company, National Gypsum, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Wyle Labs, Inc. in Southern Maryland.    Along with her active career she was a devoted mother of three wonderful children.   Undoubtedly, the greatest joy in her life was the time that she spent nurturing her children through their developmental years and broadening their interests in the arts, natural sciences, and a wide assortment of service activities.  Margaret’s passion for environmental preservation lead to her involvement with the Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust, for which she served as president for a number of years until stepping down this past year.  Throughout her life, she also had a deep love for gardening and animals of all kinds. Margaret’s final days were spent surrounded by family.

A memorial Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church on 36th St. NW (between N and O streets), Washington, D.C., on June 22, 2012, at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a celebration of life and reception.   In deep appreciation for the inspiring care provided to Margaret during her illness, the family requests that donations in memory of Margaret be made to help support the cancer research and clinical care/work of Dr. Jimmy Hwang at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.  Such memorial gifts should be made to: MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The following message is from the Office of Emergency Management and Safety:

Beginning Monday, June 4, the UMW Emergency Management and Safety Department will begin testing all campus fire alarms. The testing will continue through June 29.  All administrative, academic and residential buildings have been scheduled according to published events. Efforts will be made to notify occupants of the testing prior to activation. The testing will consist of short bursts of bells and internment strobe activations. These tests are a mandatory requirement of the fire code. The contractors performing these tests will make every effort to be noninvasive to personal spaces and work areas.
