Dear UMW Community:

It is with regret that I inform you of the Virginia Credit Union’s decision to remove the ATM in the Woodard Campus Center. The primary reason is the steady decline in the number of transactions over the past few years. That decline in conjunction with recent regulations which would require a complete retrofit of the machine, made the operation too unprofitable.

This summer, we will gauge the interest of other financial institutions in placing an ATM on campus as well as explore the option of partnering with a nearby business in placing an ATM nearby. I will keep you posted.

The Fitness Center will be open from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 and Friday, May 18. The facility will be closed on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20.

Summer hours begin Monday, May 21. During the summer, the Fitness Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The following message is from the UMW Police Department:

UMW’s Police Department is now offering the R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense Program to Faculty and Staff Women.  R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) for Women is founded on four basic principles:  Risk Awareness, Risk Reduction, Risk Recognition, and Risk Avoidance. These principles are the basis for 90 percent of self-defense education.  R.A.D. for Women is a female-only class.

The R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense Program is a self-defense class designed for women of all ages and taught by women to teach methods to defend against potential attacks as well as to educate women about risk awareness, risk reduction, risk recognition, and risk avoidance.  The R.A.D. Systems Basic Physical Defense instructional objective is “to develop and enhance the options of self-defense, so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.”

R.A.D. Basic is a four day course offered to female faculty/staff of the UMW community free of charge. It is taught by Sgt. Sharon Delval, who is a certified R.A.D. Instructor through R.A.D. Systems and has been teaching for over 10 years, along with Officer Kelly Ernst.  The course dates are May 23, May 30, June 6, and June 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Sgt. Delval states:  “While this course educates women in self-defense and techniques to use in situations, the true reward I receive in teaching the course is the level of self-confidence that I see develop in each of my students. These are skills that can be used every day in everything they do.”

Get your race on! Once again, UMW is a proud sponsor of the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon this Sunday, May 20. Nearly 9,000 runners will hit the pavement around our campus, and we want to welcome and cheer them.

The official Mary Washington water station is near the intersection of Sunken Road and William Street.

The following message is from the office of Parking Management:

On Thursday, May 17, GW/Westmoreland parking lot and Double Drive will be reserved all day for the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy graduation ceremony. This is an event the University has proudly hosted for a number of years and we look forward to having the graduates and their families on our campus.

Faculty and staff may use all other parking areas including College Ave., University parking deck, Thornton Street and Sunken Street lots, Jefferson Hall and Framar lots and Pizza Hut lot. The Monroe lot will be reserved for a faculty sponsored conference that day.
