Arrangements for Jerry Moore

Dear UMW Friends: As you may know, Jerry Moore, husband of much-beloved longtime Seacobeck employee Pat Moore, passed away last Friday. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. A service will be held there at noon on Friday. Also, Pat will receive friends in Seacobeck Dome Room at 2:30 on Friday afternoon.

Volunteer And Cheer On Half Marathon Runners, Sunday, May 20

Get your race on! Once again, UMW is a proud sponsor of the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon on Sunday, May 20. Nearly 9,000 runners will hit the pavement around our campus, and we want to welcome and cheer them. Get into the fervor by handing out water at the official Mary Washington Water Station, near the intersection of Sunken Road and William Street. We need volunteers from 6 to 10 a.m. on race day.

We also need volunteer UMW ambassadors at the Half-Marathon headquarters and registration center at the Fredericksburg Expo Center on Friday, May 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. or Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. We will be handing out information about the school along with towels with our logo. It’s a great way to meet people from all over the country and spread the good news about the place where great minds get to work!

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Kelly Eury, marketing assistant, at keury@umw.edu. Please indicate which day and time you prefer. UMW t-shirts are available for volunteers.

Theft Alert

The following message is from the UMW Police:

Dear Fredericksburg Campus Colleagues:

Yesterday afternoon (Thursday, April 26) around 4:09 p.m., a theft occurred in George Washington Hall involving the removal of a wallet from a first floor office.

The UMW employee left her office, closed the office door, and crossed the hallway to the restroom. As she crossed, she noticed an individual standing at the north side entrance door to the building. Once in the restroom, the employee heard the door to her office opening (It is very noisy when opened.) She quickly left the restroom to investigate and saw that the office door was closed. The employee did not see anyone in the hallway. Upon entering her office she checked her personal belongings and found that her wallet was missing from a bag under the desk.

University Police were called and the employee immediately cancelled her credit cards. The thief attempted to use a credit card but it was declined at the Rt. 3 Staples just prior to 4:24 p.m. and the Rt. 3 Shell gas station at 4:26 p.m. The suspect is described as: black male, 5’10” to 6’0,” medium build, dark complexion, wearing a red athletic jersey and dark pants.

With the increasing number of groups using our facilities, we have more foot traffic through all buildings. I would ask all Fredericksburg Campus faculty and staff to reflect upon your everyday habits to promote personal safety and reduce opportunity for crime.

Consider the following:

 • Do I routinely lock my office?

 • Are my keys safe and under my control at all times?

• Are valuables kept on my person or in a locked drawer?

 • Do I stay aware of my surroundings?

• Do I lock my car, keeping any valuables out of sight?

• Do I notice and report individuals or circumstances that seem out of place?

[Call UMW POLICE x4444]

Although some crime is unavoidable, we can collectively seize opportunities to make our campus community safer by reflecting upon our daily routines and habits.

Small changes can go a long way.

Sincerely, Chief Eddie Perry UMW Police

PARKING UPDATE – CONVERGENCE CENTER CONSTRUCTION

We have received several communications regarding the ITCC project and its impact on campus traffic patterns.

To reiterate what has been shared:

ITCC “early phase” of the construction project is underway (from roughly the end of March to the end of May), two parking spots behind the Library and four spots behind Pollard Hall will be lost.  Also, the handicapped spaces near Jepson Hall will be closed – this area is being enlarged from the current two handicapped spaces to a total of seven spaces.  These new spaces will be open after May 2012.  There might be a need to temporarily eliminate one space in the Jepson lot to facilitate some truck traffic while the temporary construction road is built.  (It is not entirely clear if this will be required at this point.)
