The College of Business held the final round of its second annual Case Competition on Friday, April 27 in Woodard Hall. Beautiful Home Services, Inc, sponsored the event and awarded a total of $6,000 to the top three teams. The final five teams (out of 22) presented on Friday night to a judging panel made up of UMW alumni and administrative staff. More than 45 students and well-wishers, including COB faculty members, watched the presentations. The first place prize of $3,000 went to a team from Dr. Woody Richardson’s MGMT 490 class who self-named their team, “Jen and the Stay at Home Dads”.
Special Campus Dining Hours
All retail Campus Dining locations will close for the summer at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4. The Top of the UC will serve dinner until 7 p.m. on Friday. During Senior Week (May 7-11), breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the Top of the UC according to the following schedule:
Breakfast: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Dinner: 5 p .m. to 6 p.m.
The Top of the UC will close after dinner on May 11. On Saturday, May 12 breakfast sandwiches, pastries and beverages will be available between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Jamba Juice eatery on the second floor of the UC. A Commencement Luncheon will be served in the Chandler Ballroom from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Luncheon menu and ticket information are available on the dining web site: UMW.SodexoMyWay.com.

Eric Gable Wins 2018 Waple Award
Eric Gable, University of Mary Washington professor of sociology and anthropology, was named the recipient of the 2018 Waple Faculty Professional Achievement Award at a general faculty meeting on Wednesday, April 25.
Established in honor of Shirley Van Epps Waple, a 1952 graduate of the University, the nomination-based award recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to their scholarly or creative area of expertise.
During his 22 years of service to UMW, Gable has distinguished himself as an international scholar with an extensive publication record and an active research agenda. He is an expert on museum studies, heritage, and the religion and politics of West Africa and Outer Island Indonesia, having conducted extensive field research in these areas, as well as at Colonial Williamsburg and Monticello.
“He is a collaborative and supportive colleague, and an engaged member of the University community,” said Teresa Coffman, chair of the University Committee on Sabbaticals, Fellowships and Faculty Awards. “He is considered a strong and connected educator to his students and his colleagues hold him in high regard, as well.”
Gable wrote Anthropology and Egalitarianism: Ethnographic Encounters from Monticello to Guinea-Bissau, published in 2011 and co-wrote The New History in an Old Museum: Creating the Past at Colonial Williamsburg, published in 1997. He also has published more than 40 articles and multiple book reviews in, served on the boards of, and given keynote speeches for leading academic journals in his field, including American Anthropology, Journal of American History and Cultural Anthropology.
He is book review editor for American Ethnologist, managing editor of Museum and Society, and a past member of the editorial board of Cultural Anthropology. At UMW, he has served on multiple committees and as department chair.
Gable received a doctorate from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of California at San Diego, both in anthropology.
Research and Creativity Day Celebrates Excellence Friday
The 12th annual Student Research and Creativity Symposium is set for Friday beginning at 8 a.m. in the Hurley Convergence Center.
The campus-wide event recognizes the excellence of undergraduate research at UMW thanks to the expert guidance of faculty members.
A culmination of a year of work by UMW students, the day-long celebration includes short oral presentations, artwork, original music compositions and research across nearly all disciplines.
Additional exhibits and sessions will take place in the HCC Convergence Gallery, the Ridderhof Martin Gallery, Trinkle Hall, University Center and Monroe Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The annual student art exhibit is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in duPont Gallery.
New Perfectland, an original play with puppets, will take place in Studio 115 on the basement floor of duPont Hall at 4 and 7 p.m.

James Monroe Museum Hosts Open House Saturday
The James Monroe Museum will celebrate the fifth president’s 260th birthday with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.
Join the fifth president of the United States on his 260th birthday for photo opportunities, music and cake. Visitors will also have a chance to sit for a silhouette portrait (fee required).
Debra Schleef Named Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis
Dr. Debra Schleef, who has been serving as Interim Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis since October 2016, will assume this role on a permanent basis effective June 25, 2018, and will become Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis.
Dr. Schleef was appointed to the position of Interim Assistant Provost after an internal search was conducted in fall 2016, and over the past 18 months she has provided outstanding leadership on our institutional assessment efforts, in addition to managing the on-going institutional research and reporting functions of that office. Having started at Mary Washington in 1999 as a professor of Sociology, Dr. Schleef has served as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 2007-2014, Chair of the University Faculty Council from 2012-14, and Co-Chair of the committee for the 2020 UMW Strategic Plan.
Dr. Schleef earned her B.A. in sociology from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University. In 2016 she was awarded the J. Christopher Bill Outstanding Faculty Service Award. Her scholarly work is firmly grounded in research methodologies. She has written and administered dozens of small and large-scale surveys in a variety of formats and settings, and taught courses in quantitative research methods and advanced research methods in Sociology for over twenty years.

UMW Announces 2018-19 Common Read
UMW has selected Dear Evan Hansen text and accompanying soundtrack as the UMW Common Experience for 2018-2019 academic year.
Featuring a high school student with a social anxiety disorder who struggles to make social connections, Dear Evan Hansen is a 2015 stage musical with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book written by Steven Levenson. The musical premiered in Washington, D.C. in 2015 and opened on Broadway in 2016. Dear Evan Hansen’s original Broadway cast recording entered the Billboard 200 at number eight in February 2017.
A launch party will be hosted on Wednesday, May 2 from 2-4 p.m. in the University Center’s Magnolia Room (406A). UMW faculty and staff are invited to stop by to pick up a complimentary copy of the book and sign up to be a facilitator for the Common Experience Discussions on Friday, August 24.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio Hosts Open House This Sunday
Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont will host a spring open house Sunday, April 22. The museum will open its doors free of charge to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing visitors to experience the 28-acre estate and former residence of the artists Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne.
Featuring complimentary house and studio tours, the open house will allow visitors to stroll the restored gardens and find unique gifts in the museum shop. Drop-in Preschool Palette classes will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Roots house will be open 12 noon until 3 pm during which time guides will give the public a rare view of the building and share its fascinating history.
Glory Dawgz will be serving gourmet hot dogs throughout the day. Gari Melchers Home and Studio is a 28-acre estate and former residence of the artist Gari Melchers and his wife Corinne. The property, which is operated by the University of Mary Washington, is both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Located at 224 Washington St. in Falmouth, Virginia, a quarter mile west of the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 17, it is open daily with an admission charge.
