UMW Students Receive Innovation Award

University of Mary Washington students Maria Morran and Sam Fortier recently received Marstel-Day’s Innovation in Environmental Stewardship Award.

Marstel-Day, an international environmental consulting firm, presented each student with a $2,500 cash award at the firm’s annual “Green Gala.” Each student will work on an environmental project with the guidance of an advisor from Marstel-Day and will present their findings in August 2015.

Morran, a junior geography major, will study the elimination of plastics in the ocean gyres, swirls of ocean currents caused by global winds. Fortier, a junior business administration and sustainable development major, will investigate eliminating plastics from the economy as a whole.

“Maria and Sam’s projects stood out,” said Rebecca Rubin, president and CEO of Marstel-Day. “They are truly innovative, ambitious and address some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges, namely the hazards of plastics to our species, and polluting our lands and water. Maria and Sam represent the creativity of their generation and show us that the next generation is taking its environmental stewardship seriously.”

The awards were presented by Rubin; Jonathan Levin, provost at UMW; and Richard Finkelstein, dean of UMW’s College of Arts and Sciences.

“The University of Mary Washington is very proud that its students are working to build a better future for all of us and that they envision a resilient, green environment at its center,” said Finkelstein. He leads the development of the Climate, Environment and Readiness (CLEAR) Plan for Fredericksburg and the neighboring four counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George and Caroline.

Micah — CVC Charity Spotlight

MicahMicah Ecumenical Ministries is a Fredericksburg non-profit focused on assisting the chronically homeless, who often face barriers such as mental health, disabilities, substance abuse, and loss of supportive relationships. These barriers limit their access to assistance resources. “The ministry at Micah seeks to overcome such barriers by bringing the community together in a holistic approach that serves all of our neighbors’ needs.” Micah is having great success reducing the number of street homeless in our community. In fact, in 2013 Micah supported 137 people in permanent housing and increased the income of 87 individuals. As a result of their work, the number of street homeless in our community has decreased by 49% in the last four years, and Micah is being recognized across the state as a leader in the nationwide effort to reduce, and ultimately end, homelessness. As the holidays approach and the tax year comes to a close, consider giving to one of the CVC charities.  If you choose to support Micah, please use CVC # 3353. UMW Philharmonic Hosts Holiday Pops Concert, Dec. 5

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic will host its annual Holiday Pops Concert, “Home for the Holidays,” tonight, Friday, Dec. 5.

UMW Philharmonic Holiday Pops Concert Orchestra

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium, located in George Washington Hall on the university’s Fredericksburg campus. Tickets are $10 per person, and admission is free to children under eight years old.

Show highlights include a live performance of “Frozen” and the original John Williams score to the film “Home Alone.” Mary Katherine Greenlaw, mayor of Fredericksburg, will narrate a stirring rendition of “Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus.” Finally, a special troupe of Highland dancers from Baffa Academy of Irish Dance in Stafford and Richmond will perform two numbers from Celtic Woman.

The orchestra is welcoming back UMW faculty baritone In Dal Choi, who will sing “Ave Maria” and “O Holy Night.” Before joining the UMW faculty, Choi was a music director of the James Madison University Chorus.

Past holiday concerts have featured some of the Philharmonic’s best efforts including last year’s Beethoven’s Ninth, a Polar Express segment in 2012 that actually had a train rolling through the auditorium, and “A Fiddler’s Holiday” in 2011 that became a national PBS pledge show.

Tickets for James Farmer Scholars Night at the Washington Wizards, Dec 5.

The James Farmer Scholars program is hosting a Wizard’s night, on Dec. 5 at the Verizon Center.

The Washington Wizard’s will play against the Denver Nuggets. We are opening the tickets to all members of the UMW community.

The cost is $60 per person. All are welcome. Great seats. There is a section just reserved for the University of Mary Washington James Farmer Scholars Program.

MyTime Implementation Plan

The MyTime team is now ready to present to the UMW community the implementation plan for MyTime, UMW’s new time and attendance system. I ask that you share this plan with your direct reports to disseminate the information with all staff, convey the importance of immediate action, and take action yourself, if appropriate.

Due to the notable impact MyTime will have on campus wide operations and system interfaces, it will be rolled out in two phases. The dual-phased approach will allow our technology experts to work with our community on necessary computer upgrades, allow our core project team members to assess and assure all data integration components, and provide ample training opportunities for our staff (including student aides/employees).

• Phase 1 – Wage staff and student aides/employees along with their approving supervisors will begin using MyTime on Jan. 12, 2015. Training will start Dec. 8, 2014.

• Phase 2 – Full-time classified staff and Administrative Faculty along with their approving supervisors will begin using MyTime on Feb. 10, 2015. Training will begin mid-January 2015.

The successful implementation of MyTime is dependent upon full cooperation of all UMW staff members. The cooperation of supervisors in completing the tasks outlined below is vital. Note: It is highly likely that supervisors will be involved in both phases.

Tasks:
Task 1 – Ensure Staff and Supervisors Register for Training
Phase 1 staff (wage, students, and appropriate supervisors) will require “Observe and Learn” training. Based on the needs of a department, supervisors may opt to have one or more of their staff serve as “Go To Assist” (GTA) individuals, to attend training on behalf of your department and serve as department MyTime assistant(s). All Phase 1 staff must register for class (link shown below), even if training by the GTA is allowed by the supervisor. The registration is confirmation that each staff member acknowledges the changes in payroll procedures and agrees to attend training or be provided training by the GTA.

Due to the timing of the semester exam schedule, student registration is not mandatory; support and additional communications are being targeted toward our student aides/employees.

Task 2 – Create online Employee Work Schedule Templates
Phase 2 employees (full time classified, Administrative Faculty and part-time classified with benefits) require a work schedule within MyTime. Supervisors of employees who have work schedules that differ from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one hour lunch, must complete an online Employee Work Schedule Template immediately. The templates will provide a base point for the MyTime project team to build work schedules within the MyTime system.

Task 3 – Java Updates are necessary for Accessing MyTime
IT Support Services is analyzing university computer systems to determine the best course of action for Java and Browser updates, which are necessary for MyTime and taking a leading role in the update process. The Help Desk has identified all primary computers assigned to staff in Phase I that require this Java update, and have already begun reaching out to the users. Some individuals will be contacted directly, while others may be directed to install and update programs via web direction. Also, contact with all Banner INB users is being made to guide them through the update process as changes to Java can impact access to Banner INB. Once the Java update for the Phase I staff and Banner INB users has been completed, the Help Desk will start to reach out to the Phase 2 staff.

If your department has computers that are used by student aides/employees or for other tasks, and you need those computers to have access to MyTime, supervisors will need to ensure those computers are updated as part of this process by contacting the Help Desk. Computers in labs and classrooms have already been updated to the proper version of Java. This enables staff, including students, to have access to MyTime in the rare situations in which a computer is not or cannot be updated due to conflicts with specialized software. If you have yet to be contacted, expect to hear from Help Desk representatives in the near future; please be timely in response to their emails.
