News from Human Resources
Have You Thought about Retirement?
It is closer than you think!
Today is a good day to evaluate if you have saved enough money to live comfortably in retirement.
If you haven’t started a savings plan, this is a good time to begin with as little as $10 a payday. And if you are a full time employee, the University will match 50% of your contributions to the 457 or 403(b) Plan or $20 per pay day, whichever is less. If you are already participating, evaluate if you can save more to increase your retirement income.

UMW Eco Rep Starts Petition to Expand VRE Service
Max Devilliers, a UMW senior and an Eco Rep in the UMW Sustainability Office, has written a petition to request Virginia’s commuter train, the VRE, to offer weekend and counter rush hour service. It is posted it to the website MoveOn and has already received 50 signatures.
Scarce parking, expensive parking lots, high gas prices, and congestion on Interstate 95 are multiple reasons to avoid driving and instead encourage us to take the train. Currently, however, the VRE does not offer weekend or offpeak train service.
Many faculty and staff could benefit from additional VRE train service, whether for commuting, going to meetings in D.C., or attending special events there.
If you would like to support this petition to VRE, you can sign it here.
Fall Luncheon Brings UMW Staff Together
Photos by UMW Human Resources staff
University of Mary Washington staff came together for the annual fall employee luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to hear campus updates.
“Every one of you is an ambassador for this institution. Think about that as you go about your daily lives,” said President Richard V. Hurley, who also discussed admissions and branding efforts, the student center, a nursing completion program, and his day-to-day activities.
Provost Jonathan Levin, who joined the university in June, introduced himself and shared his vision for the university.
“We need to reaffirm our roots,” he said, “while on the other hand look forward, innovating and preparing our students for the global and technological environment of the 21st century.”
Throughout the event, a number of people won prizes ranging from $50 to one month of free lunches at Seacobeck to a new iPad Mini.
Anna Billingsley, associate vice president for University Relations, Melina Downs, media manager, and Shelley Keith, director of digital communications, gave a presentation on EagleVision, UMW’s new digital signage system, and the capital improvements website.
Mark Mermelstein, director of campus recreation and the fitness center, spoke about campus recreation classes and fitness center offerings.
Les Johnson, acting president of the Staff Advisory Council and capital outlay projects manager for facilities services, updated the crowd on the upcoming council elections. Nominations are now open and will be accepted through Monday, Oct. 28. Voting will begin Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The Staff Advisory Council also presented the winner of the UMW Spirit video contest. Here is the winning video:

Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign
As the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign starts up, I thought it would be good to share the link to this year’s promotional video. It’s about seven minutes long and brings a very clear message as to what CVC is all about…an opportunity to give to organizations that provide assistance and services to those in our communities who need them. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch…it really does illustrate the real difference CVC is making each year, and the impact your giving can make. If you already made your pledge, I want to thank you for your participation. If you have not yet made your pledge, take the time to watch this video, and then peruse the 2013 Directory of Charities. I have no doubt that you will find an organization there that supports a cause near and dear to your heart. Whether your pledge is for $1 a paycheck or $100, you are making a difference.
As always, if you have any questions at all about CVC, feel free to contact Lori Izykowski at 540/654-1105 or lizykows@umw.edu.
