Four UMW Faculty Present at 2013 Lilly Conference

Suzanne Sumner, professor of mathematics, Mary Beth Mathews, associate professor of religion, Kathryn Loesser-Casey, professor of biology, and Debra Hydorn, professor of mathematics, gave presentations at the 2013 Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching. The theme of this year’s conference was “Evidence Based Teaching and Learning.” Professors Sumner and Mathews gave a poster presentation on “The ‘Race and Revolotion’ First-Year Seminar: Reclaiming the University of Mary Washington’s Social Justice.” Professors Hydorn and Loesser-Casey gave a workshop on “A New Course to Develop Students’ Scientific Reasoning and Practice Skills.” The conference took place in Bethesda, Md., from May 30 – June 2.
Gaines Translation Published in TAEM
Alphonse Daudet
James F. Gaines, Professor of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, has completed a translation of 19th century French writer Alphonse Daudet’s story, “The Lighthouse on Bloody Shoals,” in the spring issue of the online journal The Arts and Entertainment Magazine/Eerie Digest. It is the second of Daudet’s Tales From My Mill that he has worked with and deals with the author’s impressions of seaside life in Corsica in the 1880’s.
Drs. Liss & Erchull Present Research with UMW Students at APS
Dr. Miriam Liss and Dr. Mindy Erchull recently presented a poster, Conceptualizing Objectification as a Source of Insidious Trauma, with Haley Miles-McLean, Caitlin Robertson, Charlotte Hagerman, Michelle Gnoleba, and Leanna Papp, a group of psychology students with whom they conducted research during the 2012-13 acadecmic year, at the annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science in Washington, DC.
Nabil Al-Tikriti Submits Paper at Baghdad Translation Conference
On 7-9 May, Nabil Al-Tikriti submitted a paper entitled “A Tale of Two Nations: Translation Traditions in the Arab World and Turkey” to the Third International Translation Conference in Baghdad, Iraq. In this conference addressing a wide variety of theoretical and contextual issues related to the field of translation, Prof. Al-Tikriti’s paper addressed a comparison of translation traditions and realities in Turkey and the Arab World. This conference was sponsored by the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and the Dar al-Ma’mun Publishing House. In the course of this visit, Prof. Al-Tikriti also provided an extensive interview to the Ministry’s prime newspaper, The Translator, and visited a number of sites throughout Baghdad. These sites included the National Archives and Library and the Iraqi National Museum, which were especially opened for the conference delegation. The US delegation to this conference also visited the US Embassy in Baghdad, where they met with Cultural Affairs Officers and discussed possibilities of educational exchange between Iraqi and American institutions.

Scharf’s Play Appears in New Play Festival
Mark Scharf’s play FREEFALL appeared in the Compass Rose Theater’s First Annual New Play Festival at the Compass Rose Theater in Annapolis, MD. Mark teaches Playwriting for the Department of Theatre and Dance.
Debra Hydorn Presents Infographics Poster at USCOTS
Debra Hydorn, professor of mathematics, presented the poster “Infographics: A First-Year Seminar on Visual Communication” on May 17 at the US Conference on Teaching Statistics in Cary, NC. The poster provided information about the organization and goals of the course and showcased example infographics created by students enrolled in the course.
