Schiffrin Shares Thoughts in Journal of Child and Family Studies

Professor of Psychological Science Holly Schiffrin contributed to an article, “A 4-year-old can run errands alone … and not just on reality TV” in the Journal of Child and Family Studies. “The biggest gift parents can give their children is the opportunity to make their own decisions,” Schiffrin said. “Parents who ‘help’ their children too much stress themselves out and leave their kids ill-prepared to be adults.” The article was picked up by  WUNC, NPR and Wisconsin Public Radio.

A recent study by Associate Professors of Psychology Miriam Liss and Holly Schiffrin and 2012 graduate Kathryn Rizzo appears in the article “Smother Mother: Why Intensive Child Rearing Hurts Parents and Kids,” published on Time.com on Friday, July 13.

The study, “Insight into the Parenthood Paradox: Mental Health Outcomes of Intensive Mothering,” also is mentioned in a recent op-ed in the New York Post.

Liss and Schiffrin’s Study Garners National Media Attention

Associate Professors of Psychology Miriam Liss and Holly Schiffrin’s study “Insight into the Parenthood Paradox: Mental Health Outcomes of Intensive Mothering” has attracted national media attention. Liss and Schiffrin co-authored with study, published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies, with 2012 graduate Kathryn Rizzo.

References to the study appear in numerous media outlets, including Chronicle of Higher Education, Forbes.com and Buzz Feed. Schiffrin also discusses the study in an interview on radio station 1320 WILS.

Holly Schiffrin Talks Psychology & Design at Workshop

Holly Schiffrin presented during a four-hour workshop at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Architects National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, May 16. The workshop, “Happiness and Architecture: Linking Design to Positive Psychology,” also featured Charles First, an architect with HEERY that has been working on the Dahlgren campus. Other co-presenters included Tim Bachman and Connie Hom of Buckingham Greenery.

Holly Schiffrin, associate professor of psychology, and Hilary Stebbins, assistant professor of psychology, are presenting at the 34th annual National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology conference from January 3 to January 6.

Stebbins is presenting “It’s Not That Boring! Active Learning Activities That Help Make Teaching Biopsychology More Fun and Effective” at a participant idea exchange on Tuesday, January 3.

Schiffrin is presenting “Predicting Student Success in Introductory Statistics for Psychology: You Can Lead a Horse to Water, but You Can’t Make Him Drink It” at a poster session on Thursday, January 5.

 

 

 

Holly Schiffrin to be Featured on Public Radio Program

Holly Schiffrin, associate professor of psychology, discusses how lifestyle changes brought on by the recession might be better for one’s well-being during an interview on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The interview originally aired in January 2011 on public radio stations across Virginia.

Holly H. Schiffrin, assistant professor of psychology, was interviewed by the “With Good Reason” public radio program about how lifestyle changes brought on by the recession might be better for one’s well-being.

Schiffrin told “With Good Reason” that one of the surest ways to find happiness doesn’t have to cost a nickel: spending time with friends and family. Schiffrin’s interview appeared during a broadcast called “You Got To Move” that aired the week beginning Saturday, January 1 and that is available online at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2011/01/the-end-of-obesity.

Schiffrin specializes in child development, parenting practices, positive psychology, and research methods for psychology. She earned a Ph.D. and a master of science in applied developmental psychology from the University of Miami and a bachelor of science in psychology from Mary Washington. She also received a master’s-level certificate in parent coaching from the Parent Coaching Institute at Seattle Pacific University.

“With Good Reason” is the only statewide public radio program in Virginia. It hosts scholars from Virginia’s public universities who discuss the latest in research, pressing social issues and the curious and whimsical. “With Good Reason” is produced for the Virginia Higher Education Broadcasting Consortium by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and is broadcast in partnership with public radio stations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Holly H. Schiffrin, assistant professor of psychology, wrote the opinion-editorial essay “Does Money Buy Greater Happiness?” for The Free Lance-Star, which published the article Oct. 3. The essay also was published by numerous other newspapers, including the Miami Herald, the Denver Post and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune. In addition, Schiffrin presented a poster, “The Impact of Affect on Cognitive Processes,” with students Caitlyn Yantis, Rebecca Groman, Allie Sleeman, Elinor Tuhy and Eric Zupko at the Association for Psychological Science conference in Boston in May.
