Antonio Barrenechea, associate professor of English, recently published the retrospective review essay “Thomas Pynchon, Literary Giant.” It is the lead essay in an issue on “Big Novels” for American Book Review 37.2 (2016).
Mathur Presents on Shakespeare and Riot
Maya Mathur, associate professor and associate chair of the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, presented the paper “Riotous Genres” at the annual conference of the Shakespeare Association of America, which was held in New Orleans from March 24-26, 2016. Her paper was part of a seminar on “Shakespeare and Riot.”
Hydorn Elected Councilor for CUR
Debra Hydorn, professor of mathematics, was recently elected to a three-year term as Councilor for the Mathematics & Computer Science division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Councilors are the governing body of CUR and set policy and develop programs for the organization.
Street Food Fest Chefs’ Fare, March 30
Campus Dining invites you to join them for their annual Chefs’ Fare culinary competition on Wednesday, March 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Top of the University Center. Chefs from five universities will be competing against UMW’s Executive Chef, Andreas Ortner, and his culinary team for your votes! This year’s theme is “Street Food Fest,” so each chef will present his best street food fare and you will have the opportunity to vote for your favorite. The cost for faculty and staff is only $6. At our March meeting, Michelle Crow Dolby shared exciting information about Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont and the events there. Belmont’s 5th Annual Beeping Egg Hunt took place Sunday, March 20. The event was for visually impaired children and their families. Families enjoyed an audible egg hunt, miniature petting zoo, Touch a Tractor and activities in the art gallery. Did you know that Belmont offers guided woodland hikes conducted by Virginia Master Naturalists? Check out the Belmont website for more information. Admission is free for UMW employees.
