Admitted Student Phone-a-thon – Volunteers Welcome

The Office of Financial Aid mailed more than 1,000 financial aid awards to admitted first year and transfer students in January. Join us as we personally reach out to students to confirm its receipt and remind them of the next steps toward enrollment. This is an important outreach effort that will help with the success of the university’s enrollment goal for Fall 2020.

Anyone who completes a call to 10 students will be entered into a drawing for a reserved parking space for one month. (One entry per 10 completed calls)

SAC Collecting Supplies for Hugh Mercer Elementary Through Jan. 31

The Staff Advisory Council is collecting supplies to restock Hugh Mercer Elementary School in Fredericksburg City!

We are looking to collect:

  • No. 2 Pencils
  • Crayons
  • Washable Markers
  • Glue Sticks
  • Tissues
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • White Copy Paper
  • Expo Markers

Drop off for Supplies:  Lee Hall, Student Services Center 2nd Floor, Cashier and/or Student Account Windows

Faculty & Staff Dining Room Closing

The Faculty and Staff Dining Room at the Top of the University Center will close for the winter break following lunch service on Thursday, December 12th. The main dining room at the Top of the UC will be open regular hours through dinner on Friday, December 13th.  A continental breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 14th, after which the dining room will be closed until early January.

Details on the resumption of service at the Top of the UC will be posted on the Campus Dining web site (UMW.SodexoMyWay.com) during the first week of January. Most Campus Dining offices will be closed between December 20th and January 2nd. For additional information contact Dining@UMW.edu or call Rose Benedict at 540-654-2169.

Social Wellness: Put It Into Practice and Happy Holidays from PCOW

As we head into our holiday break, how can we define Social Wellness in our lives? How can we connect better with our friends or immediate and extended family? Time is our most important treasure that we can give someone every day of the year. Whether we are interacting over food, writing a hand-written note, or enjoying an event together, let us take time this holiday break to practice good wellness, not just social, but also the other dimensions of our wellness wheel: spiritual, financial, mental, occupational, and physical.

The President’s Council on Wellness would like to wish you and your family a Happy Holiday season. In gathering with family and friends and celebrating our wonderful holiday traditions, let’s continue to build our relationships with those around us to help create and practice good wellness. As we welcome in 2020, plan those lunches with friends, attend a UMW Great Lives Series on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or find fun events to attend in downtown Fredericksburg. Share those with us on our Facebook page: UMW Wellness and enjoy the beauty of the holiday season.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

The Student Health Center plans to bring to UMW – Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) on January 6 and 7.  This two-day interactive practice dominated course will help recognize risk for suicide, intervene to prevent immediate harm, and link persons at risk to the next level of care. It is free, and you can bring your lunch. We hope in addition to student affairs staff, faculty/staff might be interested in joining. The training can accommodate about 30 people in total, and will be in the UC’s Colonnade Room A&B. Please let Dr. Nancy Wang (nwang@umw.edu) know if you are interested in attending.

There are many ways in which on-time adoptions save students money; one of them, Textbook Buyback, takes place Dec. 9 – 14. Save time and money on large copy jobs using the UMW Copy Center. Turn-around is usually 24 hours, with the exception of peak times, such as the beginning of each semester.

Vending Machine Readers

Snack and beverage vending machines now accept the following payment methods:

  • Credit card
  • EagleOne card
  • Cash
  • Mobile pay

EagleOne and credit card transactions are processed through the same card reader. When paying by credit, please be aware that a $5 charge might temporarily show as pending on your account, but once processed, your account should only be charged the actual amount of sale. An explanation of this authorization hold can be found here.

Wireless Phone Chargers

Caution: wireless phone chargers can cause damage to RFID chips or magnetic strips. If you keep your EagleOne or credit cards in a phone wallet or case, make sure to remove them before charging.

Parking Management

UC Loading Dock Parking Area

The lot that includes the UC loading dock will remain closed to parking through November 2019. The accessible spaces from this lot have been relocated to the Annex lot.

If assistance is needed during the time of this closure, please contact the University Police Department at x1025. Questions may be directed to Parking Management at x1129.

Post Office

Thanksgiving Break

When the campus is closed for holiday breaks, the Post Office is too. The office will be closed Wednesday, November 27, and reopen Monday, December 2. Please stop in early to have all your mailing needs met before we close for Thanksgiving break!

Postage Increase

A USPS rate increase takes effect January 26, 2020. First class mail prices will not change: stamps will remain $0.55. However, priority mail and other rates will change. Visit this website for a complete list of changes.

Local Children Curate Exhibition at James Monroe Museum

“Curating Ideas,” a new project through the James Monroe Museum, gives Fredericksburg youngsters the opportunity to curate museum exhibitions. During the six-week program, students from Old Town Academy shadowed curator Jarod Kearney to learn how museum exhibitions are curated. Students then chose an object in the museum to research and design their own exhibition around. In an article in The Free Lance-Star, Scott Harris, executive director of University of Mary Washington Museums, said the students’ exhibits showed their understanding of “the importance of objects for telling stories.” Read more.
