Our History and Mission:
The Moss Free Clinic, which opened on Nov. 2, 1993, began as a grass-roots effort to provide basic health care to people who are not eligible for government assistance, who do not have health insurance and who fall within designated federal poverty guidelines.
The Clinic is sponsored by the Fredericksburg Area Regional Health Council, Inc., an outgrowth of a committee established by the Fredericksburg Area Medical Society in Nov. 1991. The committee was created to assess the district’s primary health needs and develop a cost-effective plan to meet those needs.
The Council is a private, nonprofit, 501(c) (3) corporation, consisting of volunteer directors, which include health professionals and lay citizens, representing a wide range of occupations and interests.
As a project of the Council, the Moss Free Clinic’s mission is to:
Improve the health and wellness of low-income, uninsured people through quality healthcare delivered in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
The Clinic puts particular emphasis on prevention and individual patient education, as well as providing early intervention, to prevent and/or treat illness and disease.

Campus-Wide Food Drive Nov. 6-13
Campus Dining and the UMW Athletic Department, with the support of the UMW Staff Advisory Council and UMW Bookstore, are sponsoring Sodexo’s tenth annual “STOP Hunger” campus and community wide food drive from Nov. 6-13. The goal this year is to collect 25,000 pounds of food, or more than five times the 4,729 pounds of food donated last year. Helping us in this effort are the local YMCA, radio station 99.3 The Vibe, LifePoint Church, Fredericksburg Baptist Church, Food Lion, Giant Food and several area schools and community organizations. All donations will go to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.
The UMW Staff Advisory Council, recognizing that hunger is a daily disaster and not just a seasonal need, began their “One Can Hope” food drive earlier this fall and will continue it through Dec. 18. Since all of their donations also go to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, they have generously agreed to add any donations they receive between Nov. 6 and 13 to our “Stop Hunger” food drive campaign.
The Athletic Department is also participating in a conference-wide food collection competition, which has been won for the last several years by CNU. Our athletes hope to take first place this year, “Canning CNU” and securing recognition for our community’s generosity. They will be manning donation tables in front of the Giant Food store in Eagle Village and assisting with collections across campus throughout the drive.
We are also pleased that radio station 99.3 The Vibe is lending great support to the food drive. In addition to making public service announcements about the drive they will be broadcasting live and giving out prizes at our curb-side collection event on Nov. 6, and they will also provide a free “Vibe” party for the residence hall that brings in the most pounds of food per person in the hall.
We hope everyone in our campus community will contribute to the “Stop Hunger” food drive, providing much-needed food for many of our neighbors. Here are some of the many campus donation opportunities:
- Nov. 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Curb-Side Collection by Seacobeck Hall. Parking spaces will be reserved so that you can easily drive up and deliver your food donations.
- Nov. 6-13: Collections bins in all Campus Dining locations and the UMW Bookstore. Place food donations in the “Stop Hunger” bins. If you make a donation at the UMW Bookstore you will receive a 15 percent discount on your purchase, too!
- Nov. 6–13: “One Can Hope” donation locations.
- Purchasing Office at Eagle Landing (fourth floor)
- Financial Aid Bureau at Lee Hall (first floor)
- Human Resources (just inside the front door)
- George Washington Hall (one collection bin in each hallway on first, second, and third floors)
- Physical Plant Foyer
- Nov. 9-13: Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Truck in Ball Circle Please check the Campus Dining web site next week for details regarding collection hours.
For additional information about any aspect of the “Stop Hunger” food drive please visit UMWDining.com, e-mail us at Dining@UMW.edu, or contact Campus Dining Marketing Assistant Heather Hosey 540-654-5982.
Message from CVC
Consider reporting your donations made to a CVC listed charity between Jan. 1 2015 and Dec. 31 2015 to CVC via the Direct Giving Tool online! *
Direct Giving occurs when a donation is given to directly to a CVC listed charity and is NOT processed through any CVC channel.
Direct Giving can actually come in many forms.
Examples would be:
- Donations of clothing, musical instruments, food, vehicles, appliances, property or toys directly to the charity
- Direct monetary donations directly submitted to the charity
- Memberships to clubs or museums (YMCA, Art or Science Museums, etc.)
- Purchase of a charitable item (Girl Scout cookies, commemorative wristbands/items, etc.)
- Participation in a charity run, spaghetti meal or pancake breakfast, where money was given for a ticket or entry, etc. (FYI – NEW THIS YEAR – For the Richmond Marathon, Monument Avenue 10k, Conquer the Cobbles and other events across the state that are run by the SportsBackers – use CVC Code 8406)
At this link: http://survey.dhrm.virginia.gov/n/2015DGTool.aspx, fill out the basic information required so we can . . .
- document that the right CVC Charity has received a gift
- credit your Agency/University/College/Organization
- circle back if we have questions or there is an error
- collect what we require for an audit
Have ready a picture or scan or screen print or the file of your receipt or ticket ON YOUR COMPUTER OR PHONE, and the CVC Code and Name of the charity you donated to, which can be found here: http://www.cvc.virginia.gov/cvccharitysearch.html
For those wishing to maintain some anonymity, we would suggest you have your CVC Coordinator submit your Direct Giving under their information.
And it’s that simple! You’ll receive a confirmation of the information you provided via email, and your CVC coordinator will receive an updated totals report (not individual names or amounts) with an overall progress report that is sent out periodically through the campaign.
This portal will be open year-round. The cut off date and time to count towards the current giving year, 2015, will be Jan. 1, 2016 at midnight.
