UMW Accepting Applications for Nursing Completion Program
The University of Mary Washington will begin accepting applications on Tuesday, April 1, for its inaugural bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) completion program. The program, which will begin this fall, received final approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) on March 18.
The program is designed for registered nurses who have graduated with an accredited associate’s degree or diploma nursing program and have a registered nurse (RN) license. The program, available both full-time and part-time, will combine online and face-to-face classroom learning. UMW plans to maintain the tradition of small class sizes to allow students to have a one-on-one relationship with faculty.
In addition to higher level nursing courses, the BSN completion program includes coursework which allow nurses to make connections between their everyday clinical nursing situations and the liberal arts disciplines, including advanced writing techniques, sociology courses on global health and medicine, and medical ethics.
“Continuing one’s education to the bachelor level encourages the registered nurse to see a more global picture of healthcare,” said Dr. Pamela McCullough, director of the program. “The nurse is looking at populations instead of individuals and is learning how to think using different models. It’s exposure to different ways of thinking.”
For more information about admissions criteria or the program’s curriculum, visit http://cas.umw.edu/bsn-program/. For admission questions, contact Sarah Lindberg at slindber@umw.edu. For questions related to the curriculum, contact Pamela McCullough at pmccullo@umw.edu.

Jailed for Fighting Cancer

From left, Kashef Majid, Marty Morrison, Rick Hurley and Jonathan Levin hope to post bail on a rainy afternoon to raise money for fighting cancer.
If you ventured down Campus Walk on Wednesday, chances are you spied President Hurley and Provost Levin in handcuffs begging for passers-by to bail them out of the slammer. They weathered the cold rain to serve time on behalf of UMW’s Jail and Bail. Also jailed for “fighting cancer” were Virginia MacIntosh in the Department of Psychology, Kashef Majid in the College of Business, and Marty Morrison in University Relations. Lori Izykowski in Advancement, and David Rettinger, in the Department of Psychology, even took whipped cream pies in the face to benefit the cause, along with students Lauren Strayhorn, Katie Sue Van Valkenburg and Alli Leibowitz.
The event, which also included an evening luminaria ceremony honoring those affected by cancer, raised nearly $2,000 for UMW’s Relay for Life.
That’s a great start to the $54,000 goal UMW’s Relay for Life aims to collect at the all-night celebration on April 5-6 to build awareness and collect funds for cancer research and to celebrate cancer survivors. The UMW community can join the effort by going to www.relayforlife.org/umwva.

The Eagle Has a Name!
The Name the Eagle Contest
Winning Name: Baldwin
Submitted By: Tameka Jalal, Office Manager in the Events Office
Tameka will receive a free lunch in Seacobeck
Now that it has a name, Baldwin will begin flying around campus, landing on unsuspecting members of the University community. When Baldwin lands, instructions on how to send him off to the next person will come with him. Baldwin’s victim may choose the next place he lands.
Any additions or “improvements” to Baldwin along the way are strongly encouraged.
