Kimberley Buster-Williams, vice president for enrollment management, had an article featured in Strategic Enrollment Management Quarterly’s summer edition (Vol. 7, Issue 2). The article was titled “Reflections on SEM Leadership: Evolving and Emerging Roles.” SEM Quarterly, published by AACRAO, provides knowledge and insight into the ongoing evolution of strategic enrollment management (SEM). SEMQ bridges the gap between theory and practice with articles by thought leaders and practitioners who address the emerging dynamics of SEM, including: executive-level leadership, leading strategies, internationalization, research, academic orientation, and current trends.

Associate Professor of Middle Eastern History Dr. Nabil Al-Tikriti served as an election monitor for the Ukraine parliamentary elections on 16-24 July. Joining 90 Americans in the U.S. delegation of some 750+ observers total, Al-Tikriti worked as an OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) STO (Short Term Observer) in 11-12 rural villages in the agricultural region around Berdyansk, in Eastern Ukraine. In the course of his visit, Al-Tikriti spent four days in Berdyansk, an industrial port on the Sea of Azov, and five days in the capital Kiev, where observers carried out preliminary briefings. While there, he found time to visit the Chernobyl Museum, the National History Museum, and several World War II monuments in the rural villages around Berdyansk.
Originally scheduled to be held at the end of October 2019, the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary elections were brought forward after newly inaugurated President Volodymyr Zelensky dissolved parliament early on 21 May 2019 (a day after his inauguration). In the event, the “Servant of the People” party won the most seats, enabling the formation of a new government. For more information on the politics behind this elections, see this article.
This is the 15th OSCE-monitored election Al-Tikriti has observed since 1997, and the 3rd within the past year.

Professor of Classics, Philosophy and Religion Joe Romero Contributes Essay to Volume on Ancient Greek Epigram
Professor of Classics, Philosophy and Religion Joe Romero (CPRD) has contributed an essay, “‘From atop a lofty wall’ Philosophers and Philosophy in Greek Literary Epigram,” edited by Maria Kanellou, Ivana Petrovic, and Chris Carey and published by Oxford University Press in a volume entitled Greek Epigram from the Hellenistic to the Early Byzantine Era (2019) pp. 288-304.

That’s right – UMW employees can sign up for Monday/Friday Lunchtime Yoga or Wednesday Yogalates classes with the comfort of knowing you are accompanied only by other UMW employees. Announcing Giving Day 2020
Save the date: Mary Washington’s 4th Annual Giving Day will be held Thursday, March 19, 2020. Mary Wash Giving Day, also known as #MaryWashDay, is a 24-hour online event in which alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends of UMW come together to make gifts to areas across the University. It’s an opportunity for you to raise funds to support departmental priorities.

If your department or campus organization would like to participate in Mary Wash Giving Day 2020, please fill out this short form by September 3. We will hold an initial mandatory meeting for all participating groups on Thursday, September 26. In an attempt to accommodate differing schedules, we will offer this meeting at two different times: 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., both in the Hurley Convergence Center Digital Auditorium.
During this kickoff meeting, we will go over all of the new guidelines for Giving Day 2020 and distribute the Giving Day 2020 informational packet. In an effort to streamline, this packet will contain all of the guidelines, due dates, and information needed to make Giving Day 2020 a success. After this initial meeting, other optional workshops will be held throughout the year to help participants prepare for the big day.
