Registration Open for Mindfulness Meditation Course

Are you mind full, or mindful?

Our lives are often overly stimulated and harried. What would happen if we gave ourselves a few minutes each day to stop, and be fully silent and still – to meditate? Research has shown that the practice of mindfulness meditation can lead to a calm and focused mind. Such a practice helps to reduce stress, enhances self-awareness, and offers a greater sense of inner peace and connectedness with life.

UMW faculty and staff are invited to take a 7-week course at the Fredericksburg Campus on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Leidecker Center for Asian Studies in Trinkle B-39.  The course begins Oct. 3 and meets weekly through Nov. 21. There will be no class on Tuesday, Oct. 17, due to Fall Break.

This course is led by certified instructor Bill Brooks and will answer the basic question: What are we doing when we meditate? Upon completion of this course, you will have the tools and experience needed to continue an independent practice of mindfulness meditation.

The course is $15 and registration is now open! Visit the Campus Recreation Registration Portal to sign up. Simply click “Log In” in the top right corner, then click the blue button that says “Sign in with your NET ID and Password,” and use your regular UMW CAS credentials to log in to your profile.

If you have questions about the Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Course, email campusrec.umw.edu.

Campus Rec, Dept. of Art & Art History Collaborate on Mural

Director of Campus Recreation Kelly Shannon wanted to do something in the Cycle Studio to make it more fun and inviting, and Erin Hill, a graduate assistant for Campus Recreation, proposed reaching out to UMW art students to paint the mural. Campus Rec reached out to the Department of Art and Art History and Chris Musina, Assistant Professor of Painting & Drawing. Musina collaborated with the Campus Rec department, coordinated by Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellness in Campus Recreation Brittanie Haas and his summer session of ARTS 105 Design Principles students to realize the mural.

Campus Recreation and Professor Musina spoke about ideas, quotes, look and images, and Musina then took that information back to his class and set about a project. In deciding to work specifically with his ARTS 105 students, Musina thought about how a project like this could apply key principles of art and design, while also giving the students a personal connection to a building on campus. The summer session of ARTS 105 was mostly STP students, and Musina thought it would be an exciting and powerful way to connect these students to the place they would be spending the next four years. The students spent a week drawing, planning and painting the mural that now covers the walls in the Cycle Studio. The mural, in bold color, contains inspirational quotes, buildings around campus and Fredericksburg, Sammy the Eagle, and other design elements.

Campus Recreation and the Department of Art and Art History invite you to stop by and view the amazing work of a group of talented UMW students.

Students involved: Aminah Abdullahi, Djius Bundick, Morgan DeMaria, Jason Fields, Mariah Howell, Krista Kendrick, Jenifer Kramer, Andy Lin, Ramon Owens, Alex Oylear, Andrew Savino, Keshyra Smith, Angela Sokpolie, Taylor Springer, and Ali Wylde-Gladbach.

Volunteers Needed for New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is coming up in June! We are in need of volunteers for each day of the six sessions to assist with answering questions, parking and directing students and their guests to the right locations. Last year New Student Orientation was a great success because of the UMW faculty and staff who volunteered!

Are you interested in helping? If so, please this online form by Sunday, May 28. Within a week of completing the online form, you will receive an email with a link to sign up for specific shifts. You are welcome to send this information along to any UMW faculty or staff in your department. It’s more fun to volunteer with a friend!

If you have any questions or concerns about signing up, please contact Brittanie Haas at bhaas@umw.edu or JoAnna Raucci at jraucci@umw.edu. Thank you in advance for supporting New Student Orientation!
