Fitness Classes Available for UMW Employees

This class will incorporate 35 minute strength and cardio workouts for beginners and regular exercisers. The first and last weeks will comprise of fitness assessments to measure progress after completing the program. Each class will include a 5-10 minute educational topic, including nutrition tips, fitness, and more. Don’t forget – there are locker rooms with showers in Goolrick Hall, so you can shower and get to work on time!

Lunchtime Yoga
Mondays & Fridays, 12:00-12:50 p.m.
The lunchtime yoga class is a gentle, relaxing yoga class designed to give faculty and staff head space during busy workdays, as well as the energy needed to finish the day strong. Mats, blocks, straps, and instruction are provided.

Session 2 – $30

March 18-April 26 = Session 2
Registration open now!

Learn More About Mindfulness

Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Course
Tuesdays, 6 -7:30 p.m., February 12 – April 2, 2019 (excluding spring break)
Leidecker Center, Trinkle Hall, B-39
Cost: $15 (but get that money back if you attend 6+ sessions!)

Mindfulness Course begins Tuesday, February 12

Learn the practice of mindfulness in a 7-week course led by Bill Brooks, a certified meditation teacher through the Meditation Teacher Training Institute.

This 7-week introductory course is being offered to UMW faculty, staff, and students. It will answer the basic question: What are we doing when we meditate? You will learn about meditation through instruction, discussion and guided practice. Specific training will be provided on obstacles to meditation and how to work with them. Upon completion of this course, you will have the tools and experience needed to continue an independent practice of mindfulness meditation.

This experience is $15 and participants who attend six or more sessions will receive that money back in the form of a UMW bookstore gift card.

Our lives are often overly stimulated. What would happen if we gave ourselves a few minutes each day to stop, and be fully silent and still – to meditate?

Research has shown that the practice of mindful meditation can lead to a calm and focused mind. Such a practice helps to reduce stress, enhances self-awareness, and offers a greater sense of inner peace and connectedness with life.

Mary Wash Moves Announces April Winners

The April edition of Mary Wash Moves, the university’s employee walking challenge, wrapped up on April 30. All steps were tallied and averaged per team, but only one team came out on top: the gray team with an average of $289,274 steps in 30 days!

Congratulations to Cartland Berge, Leah Tams, Jerry Slezak, Shannon Hauser, Gwendolyn Hale, Sean Michael Morris, Kashef Majid, Jessica McGraw, Debra Schleef, and Christie Glancy. These individuals have won a free mindfulness session with Campus Recreation instructor Bill Brooks. The celebration date and time are still to be determined.

During Mary Wash Moves, UMW faculty and staff don’t mess around! Very unique strategies are used to gain extra steps in the work day, such as using the restroom in a different building, delivering mail by hand instead of using campus mail, and printing documents on a different floor in the building. Everyone’s creative efforts are truly something to be proud of!

Stay tuned for the next edition of Mary Wash Moves. It’s free to join and a lot of fun!
