Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently delivered a Washington lecture entitled, “Federalism, Separation of Powers and Mass Media Regulation in the United States,” to political leaders from Zambia as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.

Fallon Presents Linguistics Research
Paul D. Fallon, Associate Professor of Linguistics, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the Linguistic Society of America, held in Minneapolis from Jan. 2-5, 2014. His talk, “The Tangled Web of Reconstructing Proto-Agaw Dorsal Consonants,” was about the historical reconstruction of the Agaw, or Central Cushitic, languages, which are spoken in the Horn of Africa.

Farnsworth Talks Politics
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently gave a National Security Lecture entitled, “The Global President: International Media and the U.S. Government,” to foreign and military policy professionals at UMW’s Dahlgren Campus. The talk was drawn from Farnsworth’s new book examining international news coverage of the U.S. government during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama presidencies.
In addition, Farnsworth recently moderated a panel of five area legislators who discussed policy issues facing the 2014 session of the Virginia General Assembly. The panel was sponsored by Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Poska to Present Lansdowne Lecture
Allyson M. Poska, professor of history and program chair of women’s and gender studies, will give a presentation for the annual Lansdowne Lectures at the University of Victoria on Thursday, Jan. 30. The lecture, History, the Humanities, and the Promise of Possibilities, discusses the humanities as the foundation of intellectual innovation.

Keith Mellinger Publishes Research
Dr. Keith E. Mellinger, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, saw his article Minimal Kakeya Sets appear in the Journal of Combinatorial Designs. The article was co-authored with former student Kelly Scott ’12 who worked on the project as part of her undergraduate honors project.
Jen Chiang Publishes Articles
Yuan-Jen Chiang, Professor of Mathematics, has a research article published in the Global Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics with the title “Harmonic and Biharmonic Maps of Riemann Surfaces.”
She also publishes another research article in Essays on Mathemaitcs and Statistics by Athens Institute for Education and Research, with the title “Biwave Maps, Stability and Conservation Law,” which was presented at the 5th International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics in Athens, Greece.
Davis Presents, Publishes Article
Janine S. Davis, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, presented her research paper “The Long and Short of It: Preservice Teacher Pecha Kucha and Memoir” at the National Council of Teachers of English annual conference in Boston on Nov. 22. She also served as a social media correspondent for the conference on Twitter.
Davis’s article “Building Resilient Students: Three Strategies for Success” draws on this work with memoir and prior work on persona in teaching and appears in the December issue of Educational Horizons Magazine.
