Important Notice about Willard Hall
Earlier this summer, a steam line underneath Willard Hall ruptured, resulting in significant damage to the building. The damage from the rupture was extensive enough that the residence hall had to be closed immediately. That situation has accelerated the University’s move to take Willard, one of two original buildings on campus, offline for construction, originally slated to begin a year from now.
The Office of Residence Life and Housing is in the process of accommodating those students who were assigned to live in Willard Hall in the upcoming academic year. The majority will be housed in Bushnell Hall, which had been slated for closure in the 2017-2018 session in order to allow for some minor renovations and upgrades. The UMW facilities staff has shifted its priorities and is making necessary enhancements to provide space in Bushnell for students displaced from Willard. In addition, some other available rooms in Virginia Hall and elsewhere on campus will provide additional spaces for intended Willard residents.

Message from the President’s Office
To members of the UMW Community,
It is my pleasure to announce that Paula Zero has been appointed as the Executive Office Manager in the Office of the President after an internal search. Many of you know Paula from her work over the last few years with our Bookstore and Office of Admissions, most recently as Assistant Director of Admissions Events and Special Projects. Paula assumes her new responsibilities on July 10, 2017, and I am looking forward to the chance to work with her.
Troy D. Paino, J.D., Ph.D.
President
An announcement from the Provost’s Office
Dr. Richard Finkelstein has announced his decision to step down as Dean of Arts and Sciences, effective June 24, 2017. Dr. Finkelstein will be engaged in research this fall and is looking forward to teaching in the spring semester in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication. We thank him for his service to UMW over the last seven years and for his work to create new programs at the University. We wish him the very best as he returns to the faculty and to his teaching.
We will be putting together a search committee to start a national search for a new dean of Arts and Sciences, and you can expect more information about that in August.
I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Keith Mellinger to the position of Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences. As many of you know, Dr. Mellinger is currently Professor of Mathematics and also serves as director of UMW’s Quality Enhancement Plan. Dr. Mellinger has served UMW in a variety of capacities, including chair of the Department of Mathematics and Interim Director of Academic and Career Services. In addition, he has been substantively involved in the development and implementation of the FSEMS, as well as other components of the first-year experience. Dr. Mellinger received a B.S. from Millersville University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. In 2008, he was recognized with the UMW Alumni Association Outstanding Young Faculty Member Award.
We greatly appreciate Dr. Mellinger’s willingness to serve, and we look forward to working with him in this new role.

Sustainability Surplus at Procurement Services
Procurement Services is home to a large collection of surplus binders in all shapes and sizes. Due to a constant influx of bids and proposals for new contracts, we always have more binders than we need. Stop on by to see if we have something that fits your needs, or contact Pat Canciglia (x1237).
Help UMW stay green!
Semi-monthly July pay date
The following is from the Payroll Office:
Please be advised that the pay date for the 6/10/17-6/24/17 semi-monthly pay period will be Monday, July 3rd. The 7/3 pay date may impact automatic transfer payments you have set up with your bank. Please make sure to review your personal situation for any needed adjustments.
The Comptroller of Virginia establishes the pay dates for classified employees paid semi-monthly. Due to legislation enacted in 1994 the pay day for the final pay period in the 2nd quarter of the year (July 1 pay day) will always be the first work day of July. This is required for budgetary purposes as the Commonwealth’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
The 2017 calendar of scheduled pay dates for fulltime employees is found on the UMW website.
